Spencer proud of fellow upstart Marquez

VALENCIA, Spain (Reuters) – If 20-year-old Spanish rookie Marc Marquez seals his maiden MotoGP crown in Valencia on Sunday, one of those queueing up to congratulate him will be the man he will replace as the youngest ever champion, American Freddie Spencer.

Honda rider Marquez, who has been smashing records since his debut in 125cc at the age of 15, has a 13-point lead over title holder and compatriot Jorge Lorenzo of Yamaha going into the last of 18 races and a fourth place finish or better at the Ricardo Tormo circuit in Cheste will clinch the title.

Betis next victims on the block for Messi’s Barca

MADRID (Reuters) – Having sealed their place in the Champions League last 16 with two games to spare and Lionel Messi returning to something near his best, Barcelona are eagerly awaiting Sunday’s La Liga clash with Real Betis (2000 GMT).

Messi ended a mini goal drought with a double in Wednesday’s 3-1 Group H win at home to AC Milan and the Argentine World Player of the Year will be looking to put a run of four domestic outings for the unbeaten leaders without scoring behind him when struggling Betis visit the Nou Camp.

Lethal in attack, Real still shaky in defense

MADRID (Reuters) – Real Madrid have spent several hundred million euros assembling one of soccer’s most lethal attacking units, but coach Carlo Ancelotti is still tinkering with a defense that again looked shaky in Tuesday’s Champions League draw at Juventus.

With Portugal forward Cristiano Ronaldo and Wales winger Gareth Bale playing either side of France striker Karim Benzema in a three-man attack, Real are almost impossible to keep at bay, especially with Ronaldo in such prolific form.
