MADRID, April 28 (Reuters) – Spain’s desire for glory on the international stage is as strong as ever but the champions will need something special if they are to become the first Europeans to win the World Cup in the Americas.

The only nation from the continent to triumph in soccer’s global showpiece outside Europe, thanks to their triumph in South Africa four years ago, La Roja got an indication of the task facing them when they were humbled 3-0 by hosts Brazil in last year’s Confederations Cup final.

Benzema strike gives Real edge over holders Bayern

MADRID (Reuters) – Real Madrid struck early through Karim Benzema and comfortably held Bayern Munich at bay to beat the holders 1-0 on Wednesday and move a step closer to a first Champions League final in 12 years.

Chasing a record-extending 10th European crown, Real were content to cede possession to the slick Bundesliga champions in the semi-final, first leg and created much the better chances with a series of trademark counter attacks.

Mourinho’s cautious Chelsea frustrate Atletico

MADRID (Reuters) – Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho returned to Spain with an ultra-cautious approach as his team earned a 0-0 draw with surprise Champions League semi-finalists Atletico Madrid in a first leg lacking in excitement on Tuesday.

The stalemate at the Vicente Calderon, which Atletico coach Diego Simeone believes gives Chelsea a slight advantage in next week’s return at Stamford Bridge, came at a cost for the 2012 winners, however.

Cech, Terry to miss rest of Premier League season

MADRID (Reuters) – Chelsea goalkeeper Petr Cech will miss the rest of the season after landing heavily and injuring his right elbow in Tuesday’s 0-0 draw with Atletico Madrid in their Champions League semi-final first leg.

Captain John Terry will also be sidelined for the last three Premier League games of the campaign after twisting his ankle in the second half but he could be fit for next month’s Champions League final in Lisbon if Chelsea get through.
