Atletico urge unity after second straight defeat

MADRID (Reuters) – They had to wait almost two decades and in the end it only lasted a week – Atletico Madrid’s brief appearance at the top of La Liga, their first since 1996, ended on Saturday when they went down 2-0 at promoted Almeria.

It was a second successive defeat for Diego Simeone’s side following a 3-0 drubbing at Real Madrid in Wednesday’s King’s Cup semi-final first leg and Real, who beat Villarreal 4-2, climbed above Atletico on goal difference ahead of Barcelona’s match at Sevilla later on Sunday.

MADRID (Reuters) – Barcelona and Real Madrid are on course for a King’s Cup final showdown after Spain’s two dominant teams recorded convincing home wins in their semi-final first legs on Wednesday.

Atletico riding high before Real Cup clash

MADRID (Reuters) – Three points clear at the top of La Liga, a shrewd-looking signing in the bag and soaring optimism among their fans, Atletico Madrid are on could nine ahead of Wednesday’s King’s Cup semi-final clash against Real.

One of Spanish soccer’s poorer relations, under inspirational coach Diego Simeone, Atletico are mounting a genuine challenge this term to bitter city rivals Real and Barcelona, the world’s two richest clubs by income.

Farcical Cup tie ended by Santander protest

By Iain Rogers

(Reuters) – The King’s Cup descended into farce on Thursday when Racing Santander’s players, protesting over unpaid wages, refused to challenge for the ball after their quarter-final second leg at home to Real Sociedad kicked off.

The third-tier team announced on Monday they would boycott the game unless club president Angel Lavin and the board resigned and they formed a line on the centre circle immediately after the match at the Sardinero began.

Real hoping Bilbao do not burst their bubble

MADRID (Reuters) – Real Madrid’s 11-match unbeaten run has lifted confidence and closed the gap on La Liga leaders Barcelona and Atletico Madrid but their form faces a stern test at Athletic Bilbao’s new San Mames stadium on Sunday.

The Basque club, fiercely proud of their heritage and always keen to thwart their detested rivals from the capital, are fourth, largely thanks to their record at home where they have won 11 and drawn two in front of their passionate supporters.
