Spain seeking lift with Madrid’s 2020 ‘austerity bid’

MADRID (Reuters) – For a sports-obsessed country in the grip of a debilitating recession and stained by allegations of political corruption, winning the right to host the 2020 Olympic Games in Madrid is exactly the tonic Spain needs.

At least that is what government and bid officials are arguing as they attempt to convince International Olympic Committee (IOC) members the capital deserves to stage the world’s biggest and most expensive sporting event instead of Istanbul or Tokyo.

Barca’s dynamic duo hold no fears for Valencia

MADRID (Reuters) – The prospect of facing Lionel Messi and Neymar is a daunting one for most teams but Valencia are unlikely to be overawed if the Argentine World Player of the Year and Brazil forward feature together in Sunday’s La Liga clash at the Mestalla.

Valencia’s 55,000-capacity arena can be an intimidating stage and with their baying fans behind them, Miroslav Djukic’s side will be hopeful of inflicting a first setback of the season on the Spanish champions.

Uninspiring Real Madrid secure 1-0 victory at Granada

MADRID (Reuters) – Real Madrid made it two wins in two La Liga outings this season when Karim Benzema’s scuffed 10th-minute strike secured an uninspiring 1-0 win at Granada on Monday.

Real still seem to be finding their feet under new coach Carlo Ancelotti and, although they dominated the first half, they lost control in a poor-quality second period at Granada’s Los Carmenes stadium.
