Soccer-Debutant Callejon looking to prove himself with Spain

MADRID, Nov 12 (Reuters) – Jose Callejon has been in fine form for his club Napoli this season and the Spanish forward may now get a chance to prove he has what it takes to make a successful transition to the international arena.

Spain coach Vicente del Bosque included Callejon in the European champions’ squad for the first time for Saturday’s Euro 2016 qualifier against Belarus and next Tuesday’s friendly against 2014 World Cup winners Germany.

Rodgers defends team changes after defeat in Madrid

MADRID (Reuters) – Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers defended his team selection for Tuesday’s 1-0 Champions League defeat at Real Madrid, saying his side deserved more from the game after what he called “an excellent performance”.

Rodgers made a host of changes from the side that lost to Newcastle United in the Premier League at the weekend, leaving captain Steven Gerrard, Philippe Coutinho, Raheem Sterling, Jordan Henderson and Mario Balotelli on the bench.

Real’s Benzema turning Bernabeu boos into cheers

MADRID (Reuters) – Karim Benzema has endured his share of whistling from Real Madrid’s demanding fans in recent years but the France forward appears to have finally won over the Bernabeu after netting another Champions League goal on Tuesday.

Benzema was given a standing ovation by the Real faithful when he was taken off near the end of the 1-0 Group B win over Liverpool having struck for the holders in the 27th minute with a clinical finish from a Marcelo cross.

Bale back for Real for Liverpool visit, Ancelotti says

MADRID (Reuters) – Real Madrid’s Wales winger Gareth Bale has recovered from a muscle injury and should be available for Tuesday’s Champions League Group B match at home to Liverpool, coach Carlo Ancelotti said on Monday.

Bale, who scored one goal in nine appearances against Liverpool when he was at Tottenham Hotspur, last played for Real in the 5-0 La Liga win over Athletic Bilbao on Oct. 5 but Ancelotti said he was “fine”.
