LSI boosts outlook on improved business demand
SAN FRANCISCO, March 17 (Reuters) – Microchip maker LSI
Corp <LSI.N> raised its first-quarter results forecast on
Wednesday on signs of renewed strength in corporate technology
spending, boosting its shares as much as 12 percent.
The company’s updated outlook underscored expectations that
a corporate spending rebound will help lead the chip makers and
the technology sector in general out of the worst recession in
decades.
Intel, global chip shares jump on talk of strong Q1
SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) – Shares of Intel Corp <INTC.O> jumped 4 percent to their highest in more than a year on expectations that robust Asian sales and a rebound in corporate spending will help the chipmaker beat current-quarter earnings estimates.
The rally propelled gains in other semiconductor stocks, with Advanced Micro Devices Inc <AMD.N> and Nvidia Corp <NVDA.O> both rising more than 3 percent, while technology shares in Taiwan, Japan and South Korea followed the gains in Wednesday trading.

Intel unveils new server chips ahead of AMD
SAN FRANCISCO, March 16 (Reuters) – Intel Corp <INTC.O>
released its newest server chips on Tuesday, as it seeks to
maintain its dominance over rival Advanced Micro Devices Inc
<AMD.N>, and prepare for an expected rise in demand.
The new microprocessors, designed to power both servers and
high-end desktop PCs, are the first of Intel’s server chips
featuring smaller transistors that have helped the company’s
laptop and desktop chips push stronger performance while eking
out better energy efficiency.
National Semi profit, outlook beat forecasts
SAN FRANCISCO, March 11 (Reuters) – National Semiconductor
Corp <NSM.N> posted results and a revenue outlook that beat
estimates, as sales to industrial markets and improved
corporate spending pushed margins to a record high.
National Semiconductor said Wednesday it saw increased
demand for its specialized analog chips across the board. But
some analysts said concerns remained about a possible build-up
of inventory as companies order too much in a recovering
economy.
Global chip gear spending to leap in 2010 -Gartner
SAN FRANCISCO, March 8 (Reuters) – Global chip equipment
spending should grow by more than three-quarters in 2010, but
companies will focus on upgrades and efficiency, keeping
investment in capacity shy of pre-recession levels, two
industry trackers said.
Investment in chip manufacturing equipment is expected to
reach roughly $30 billion this year, up more than 75 percent
from a year ago, but still off the peak of about $45 billion
seen before 2007, Gartner said on Monday.
U.S. unveils cybersecurity safeguard plan
SAN FRANCISCO/WASHINGTON, March 2 (Reuters) – The United
States, pushing to promote global Internet freedom, on Tuesday
declassified some of its initiatives on safeguarding government
networks as it pursues partnerships in the effort.
The move comes as Washington has become more vocal in
opposing other governments’ censorship of the Internet and
presses its argument that Internet access is a basic human
right to express and gather online.
Intel’s Maloney, possible CEO heir, suffers stroke
SAN FRANCISCO, March 1 (Reuters) – The co-head of Intel
Corp’s <INTC.O> core products group, regarded as a potential
successor to CEO Paul Otellini, suffered a stroke at his home
and will take several months’ medical leave.
Intel said on Monday Sean Maloney is expected to resume his
regular duties after a recuperation period thought to last
several months. The prognosis for his full recovery is
“excellent,” the company added.
Intel says hackers attacked around time Google hit
SAN FRANCISCO, Feb 23 (Reuters) – Intel Corp <INTC.O> said
it faced a “sophisticated” hacker attack in January about the
same time as the recently publicized Chinese hacker attacks on
Google Inc <GOOG.O>, but noted no clear link between the two
events.
Google would not comment on whether Intel was one of the
roughly 20 unnamed companies that the world’s No. 1 Internet
search engine said had been similarly targeted in attacks that

Autodesk Q4 profit beats Street, shares rise
SAN FRANCISCO, Feb 23 (Reuters) – Autodesk Inc <ADSK.O>
posted better-than-expected quarterly results as corporate
budgets loosened and demand improved for its design software.
The company, which makes the AutoCAD design software for
architects and designers, also said it expected its operating
margin, excluding items, to increase “significantly” in fiscal
2011 over 2010.
