The Indian Express chugs in again

January 11, 2011

It was a victory long overdue and the reunion was perhaps destined to happen in no other tournament but the Chennai Open.

As India’s star tennis pair — Mahesh Bhupathi and Leander Paes — clinched their fifth Chennai Open doubles crown in 2011, there was more than one reason to celebrate.

Some are already seeing the duo as a potent threat for the upcoming Australian Open.

The last two times Paes and Bhupathi paired up, they faced first-round losses while recovering from their infamous estrangement.

In the final at Chennai, the Indian Express beat Robin Hasse and David Martin in a nail-biting super tie-breaker.

“When we play for India and play together, it’s great fun,” an ecstatic Paes said after the win.

For now, Paes and Bhupathi are all set to kickstart their Australian Open campaign in Melbourne. It’s the only Grand Slam title missing from their trophy cabinet.
