The fact that he is always trying to portray that he is not in his late 40s makes him stupid. He should accept the fact that he is old and move on. He makes a big fool of himself everytime he takes his shirt off. Grow up Salmaan!

These creators will be anxiously awaiting public’s evaluation of their creation. Many film lovers too wait for a review, before they decide to or not to take the plunge. A person who ventures to review a film, thus assumes some responsibility to impassionately evaluate the film on a number of counts.

Any useful review has to cover several aspects such as, acting, direction, screen-play, dialogue, editing, cinematography, sound, story, music, playback singing, choreography, lyrics, special effects, fights, background music, etc. Acting: All those actors who did significant roles need to be discussed. If an actor has done well, one or two crucial scenes where his or her excellence was evident have to be mentioned. If, on the other hand, an actor’s performance was low key, some examples for it too, have to be mentioned.

In other words, the conjectures expounded in the review, will need to be strengthened by citing examples or instances.

Direction is so very important that a mention in passing whether it was good or it was bad, will not suffice. Some validating scenes ought to be pointed out. Screen-play is so vital that it can make or break a film and has to be discussed citing a few examples. So is dialogue; several pieces of good (or bad) dialogue can be cited to prove the point put forth. Another aspect that ought to command much attention is editing. Even in a sub-average film, the editor may have done a good job and will need to be appreciated. So will the cinematographer, assisted by an army of technicians and the review should evaluate their performance too. A film may have failed on several other counts but still can be a visual delight.

Music, playback singing and choreography play a very important role in the success or failure of most of the Bollywood movies. These, by themselves, have made many a film success. CDs may have come out and the public may already have heard the songs, but a review of the film has to state how it performed on these three parameters vital for Indian films. If there was a song that lingered in memory long after leaving the theatre, mention it; if there wasn’t, mention that too. If the actors who took part in the song picturisation had done well, film lovers would be interested to know.

Ever since Slumdog Millionaire won the Oscar for it, viewers have become more conscious about the sound aspect too. Now a days, films use plenty of graphics, special effects, etc., especially in scenes of fights and action. One would be interested to know whether a film has remarkably good graphics, special effects, etc.

The last but not the least, is the story. There have been a good number of films which had very thin story lines and, still did well thanks to better performance on some other counts. An important fact is, a review of the story does not make it essential to narrate it. Very little part of the story gets mentioned in good reviews. A reviewer often abstains from narrating the story and, instead, confines himself or herself to expression of his views on it. Besides, narration of the whole story or a good length of it, will leave very little for the viewer to invent while inside the theatre.

A comprehensive review will have a wealth of reliable information and does great service to the film lovers and great justice to the creators of the film. A review need not essentially be a pat on the back of the creators and seldom is one; it can also be a scathing criticism, but a well validated one at that. Both are useful: a pat encourages to perform better while constructive criticism serves as a valuable guidance how to move forward.

The review of ‘Main aur Mrs. Khanna’, sadly, falls short of many of the requirements of a useful review.

Warm Regards and Happy Diwali to one and all. Sunil M S from North Parur.
