Shows on the first day of India’s biggest fashion event were cancelled on Wednesday after organisers of the Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week could not furnish mandatory fire safety permits.

Twelve contemporary artists including Dilip Sharma, Farad Hussain, Satish Gupta and Nitin Bal Chauhan lent their creative touch to a charity initiative by handpainting ten autorickshaws which will be auctioned at the Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week.

I have always been a bit cynical about the Indian fashion industry. I used to think the country’s fashion designers were wannabes trying to break into a glamorous industry despite having little or no aptitude for the trade.

But spending time at the Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week has lessened my cynicism to some extent.
