Sony plans no announcement on TV restructuring -CFO

TOKYO, Oct 11 (Reuters) – Sony Corp (6758.T: Quote, Profile, Research) said on Tuesday
it was not planning any major announcement about restructuring
its television business, after expectations had grown that it
would unveil drastic changes to turn the unit around as it heads
for its eighth straight year of losses.

In an interview with Reuters, Chief Financial Officer Masaru
Kato also said the company was becoming cautious about sales in
the crucial year-end shopping season in November and December.

Sony near buying Ericsson out of phone venture: report

HELSINKI/TOKYO (Reuters) – Sony Corp is nearing a deal to buy Telefon AB LM Ericsson’s half of their smartphone joint venture, The Wall Street Journal said, in a likely bid to catch up with rivals by unifying its mobile products under a single brand.

The move could help it recoup ground in the battle against Apple Inc and Samsung Electronics, where it has been hampered by the disparate structure of its products and online content offerings.

Sony secures Abu Dhabi funds for EMI bid-FT

TOKYO, Oct 6 (Reuters) – Sony Corp has secured
financing from an Abu Dhabi investment fund to back its bid for
British music company EMI, a media report said, an acquisition
that would beef up its content catalogue as it struggles to
compete with Apple .

Sony now has backing from Mubadala, the Abu Dhabi fund, and
investment bank Raine, to better compete with other bidders that
include Universal Music Group and Warner Music Group, according
to the Financial Times.

Nikon says first-half sales beat expectations

TOKYO, Oct 5 (Reuters) – Nikon’s (7731.T: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz) April-September
sales and operating profit beat its expectations thanks to a
healthy performance from its camera division, and advance orders
for a new model are also better than expected, the company’s
president said on Wednesday.

Makoto Kimura told Reuters in an interview that the world’s
second-largest maker of interchangeable lens cameras after Canon
(7751.T: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz) was not yet experiencing a slowdown in sales due to the
debt crisis in the euro zone, but added he was concerned about a
possible downturn in October-March.

Japan electronics companies battle Europe crisis

TOKYO (Reuters) – Japanese electronics firms are suffering from the downturn in European consumption and the euro’s slump to a 10-year low against the yen, senior executives from Sony Corp, Panasonic Corp and Fujitsu Ltd said on Tuesday.

Sony is keen to increase the proportion of parts paid for in euros, to help ease the impact on profits from a gain in the yen against the common European currency, the company’s deputy president said at the CEATEC electronics show.

Nikon unveils its first mirrorless cameras

TOKYO, Sept 21 (Reuters) – Nikon unveiled its first
mirrorless cameras on Wednesday, beating its arch rival Canon
to the nascent market for small, interchangeable-lens
cameras, where other manufacturers have met with mixed success.

Priced at around 70,000 yen ($915) and 105,000 yen, the
long-rumoured Nikon 1 J1 and Nikon 1 V1 will go on sale on Oct.
20, the company said at a launch at an upmarket hotel in Tokyo’s
Roppongi, with models, actors and Japanese TV star Takuya Kimura
on hand.

Nintendo’s 3DS rescue bid falls short, shares fall

TOKYO, Sept 13 (Reuters) – Nintendo’s attempt to
rescue its failed 3DS handheld games gadget with a raft of new
games content fell short of expectations and left investors
pessimistic about the outlook for the long-time industry
champion.

Nintendo’s shares slid 5 percent on Tuesday in a strong
broader market as investors said content would not
enable the 3DS to fight off growing competition from smartphones
and tablets.
