Crucifixion and impaling were used by ancient war loads to show the enemy what was waiting for them…ours is a much milder form of warning.

Yes, this is nothing new.

All rulers claim to be the exception to the trend of tyrants being rulers. They claim to be, instead, Plato's "philosopher King". History gives the lie to such claims. If the American people do not want to support such atrocities, the way is to avoid war altogether.

War is always ugly. Politicians and Generals are always innocent and "knew nothing".

Raining electronic death from afar with drones and apaches is civilized, but taking human trophies is barbaric, for those of you following.

We train them to kill then ridicule when the celebrate victory.
As morbid as the images are; as wrong and disgusting as taking lives of other is, as wrong a war itself is, our children typically do this for our freedom (the concept they are conditioned to believe in and are willing to die for).

Once one routinely sees death, stares it in the face and prevails, most people would celebrate each victory knowing their turn could be the next moment. All with the courage must walk in their shoes before they judge.

Times change and the horrors of yesterday is not what we want today and your title "
Sadly, human trophies are as old as war itself” is only OK if we don’t learn anything from history or life. Time to grow!

"Sadly, human trophies are as old as war itself"

This headline proves conclusively that the notion of "American Exceptionalism" is an imaginary concept with no basis in reality. We're just like everyone else - barbaric at the core.

This looks dangerously close to a Naturalistic Fallacy. "We've always done it, so it shouldn't be a big deal".

In particular, this quote sounds dangerously close to it:

"The outrage the military is expressing over these ghoulish images ignores the fact that the taking of battlefield trophies, photographic or otherwise, is as old as war itself."

According to published reports, George W. Bush acquired Saddam Hussein's pistol as his personal trophy of his war against Iraq. How many people had to die or be maimed for life for him to have that toy?
