9 reasons why the Dec. jobs report is bad news for Dems
Talk about one last gasp from the horrible year that was 2009. On the political front, the December jobs numbers were terrible news for the White House and congressional Democrats in a midterm election year. Here’s how it plays out:
1. Remember this simple formula: Unemployment drives presidential approval numbers, and presidential approval numbers drive midterm election results.
2. President Barack Obama’s approval numbers are hovering just a tick below 50 percent. Since 1962, the average House midterm loss for the president’s party when his approval is sub-50 percent is 41 seats. The GOP needs 40 to take the House.
3. And make no mistake, the December unemployment numbers were bad both economically and politically. The 85,000 job loss was worse than expected and will be played that way the media. The continuation of double-digit unemployment also resonates with voters. And not a in a good way.
4. Then will come the second-take stories that will notice the shrinking labor force, which dropped by nearly 700,000 from November. Had it stayed stable from last month, the jobless rate would have been 10.4 percent. Had it stayed stable since August, the jobless rate would be 11 percent!
5. But wait, there’s more! The U-6 rate rate which combines the basic jobless rate, discouraged workers, part-timers-who-would-rather-be-full-timers climbed to 17.3 percent. And the average duration of unemployment rose to a record high 29.1 weeks.
6. Also, there is every indication that as the slowly growing economy eventually draws workers back into the labor force, the jobless rate will creep up to new highs. (Big companies remain cautious about hiring, and small biz remains under pressure due to tight capital markets.) The validity of the Obama recovery plan will seriously be cast in doubt.
7. The sickly labor market will also make it that much harder for the White House and Hill Dems to celebrate what is likely to be a brisk upcoming GDP report in the 4-5 percent range. That seems like an abstract number compared to the unemployment rate.
8. Combine a weak labor market – which may appear to be getting worse to voters – with the moribund housing market and rising gas prices, and you have a toxic triple threat that will be poisonous to Democratic incumbents and further drain Obama’s political capital.
9. Also, watch how these numbers play with Senate and House Dems thinking about resigning like Chris Dodd and Byron Dorgan. A big improvement in the jobs numbers might have reassured any worriers that 2010 might not be as tough as some currently think. Now it looks a bit more like the worst fears of Democrats might be realized: losing the House and a half-dozen or more Senate seats.

Fiscal 2009 spending bills were all signed by Obama, not Bush. Bush signed CRAs until January. This was by choice – the choice of Pelosi and Reid who figured that Obama would win the Presidency so they sidestepped Bush. Once they made that choice, with Obama’s consent, the Dems owned fiscal 2009. When you seek authority you also own the responsibility.
I remember a year ago reading economists saying unemployment might even reach 10% this recession.
Obama, Pelosi & Reid spent nearly a Trillion dollars on the stimulus plus hundreds of billions more new spending through Obama’s blockbuster budget and other programs…
… and we got 10%+ unemployment anyway.

What the Leftwingnuts fail to understand is all wealth is created by the private sector. The government is like a leach, it can only live off the body of the private sector. The government leach grows and grows and all Obama policies stifle the private sector.
If you were a sucessful small businessperson, why would hire someone? Obama’s cap-and-trade will double your electrity costs. Obama’s health care will cost you a lot more money. Obama is strangling your business with regulation. Obama has raised your taxes and you expect Obama to raise your taxes more.
Obama’s Democrats have done things like let the R&D tax credit expire and Obama’s House just more than doubled the tax rate on venture capital profits. Obama’s card check law will greatly increase the chance your small business will become unionized.
If you are a small businessperson earning $300,000 a year, Obama and Pelois literally hate you. You provide several jobs in your community, yet you are the “enemy” to Obama, Pelosi and the Democrats. You must be regulated, hated and taxed more by the Democrats.
Read up on what has happened to small toy retailers: the Democrats have created onerous new rules that are literally causing mom-and-pop retailers as well as small handcrafted toy manufacturers to shut down. The costs of compliance are 6 figures, which exceed the revenues many get even in good times.
Of course, Obama has wrecked the economy: Obama has made war on the very people who drive the American economy forward. I was hoping Obama would be a pro-growth Democrat like JFK or Clinton, but no, Obama is just anti-business.
Obama’s budget will only get worse as the world economy recovers. The US government is borrowing Obama’s trillions at extremely low rates (literally below 1%). As the world economy recovers, investors will require higher rates. Just wait to see what you taxpayers are on the hook for when government T-bill rates get back to 5%. Not even Obama himself pretends to even come close to balancing the budget. Every year it will get much worse.
America, get ready for 3 more dire years!

Well, I have done it! I have read the entire text of proposed House Bill
3200: The Affordable Health Care Choices Act of 2009. I studied it with
particular emphasis from my area of expertise, constitutional law.
I was frankly concerned that parts of the proposed law that were being
discussed might be unconstitutional. What I found was far worse than what
I had heard or expected.
To begin with, much of what has been said about the law and its
implications is in fact true, despite what the Democrats and the media are
saying. The law does provide for rationing of health care, particularly
where senior citizens and other classes of citizens are involved, free
health care for illegal immigrants, free abortion services, and probably
forced participation in abortions by members of the medical profession. The Bill
will also eventually force private insurance companies out of business,
and put everyone into a government run system.
All decisions about personal health care will ultimately be made by
federal bureaucrats, and most of them will not be health care
professionals. Hospital admissions, payments to physicians, and
allocations of necessary medical devices will be strictly controlled by the
government. However, as scary as all of that is, it just scratches the surface.
In fact, I have concluded that this legislation really has no intention of
providing affordable health care choices. Instead it is a convenient cover
for the most massive transfer of power to the Executive Branch of
government that has ever occurred, or even been contemplated. If this law or a
similar one is adopted, major portions of the Constitution of the United
States will effectively have been destroyed.
The first thing to go will be the masterfully crafted balance of power
between the Executive, Legislative, and Judicial branches of the U.S.
Government. The Congress will be transferring to the Obama Administration
authority in a number of different areas over the lives of the American
people, and the businesses they own.
The irony is that the Congress doesn’t have any authority to legislate in
most of those areas to begin with! I defy anyone to read the text of the
U.S. Constitution and find any authority granted to the members of
Congress to regulate health care. This legislation also provides for access, by the
appointees of the Obama administration, of all of your personal health
care direct violation of the specific provisions of the 4th Amendment to
the Constitution information, your personal financial information, and the
information of your employer, physician, and hospital. All of this is a
protecting against unreasonable searches and seizures. You can also forget
about the right to privacy. That will have been legislated into oblivion
regardless of what the 3rd and 4th Amendments may provide.
If you decide not to have healthcare insurance, or if you have private
insurance that is not deemed acceptable to the Health Choices Administrator appointed by Obama, there will be a tax imposed on you. It is called a tax instead of a fine because of the
intent to avoid application of the due > process clause of the 5th
Amendment. However, that doesn’t work because since there is nothing in
the law that allows you to contest or appeal the imposition of the tax, it
is definitely depriving someone of property without the due process of
law.
So, there are three of those pesky amendments that the far left hate so
much, out the original ten in the Bill of Rights, that are effectively
nullified by this law It doesn’t stop there though. The 9th Amendment that
provides: The enumeration in the Constitution, of certain rights, shall not be
construed to deny or disparage others retained by the people;
The 10th Amendment states: The powers not delegated to the United States
by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are preserved to the
States respectively, or to the people.
Under the provisions of this piece of Congressional handiwork neither the
people nor the states are going to have any rights or powers at all in many
areas that once were theirs to control.
I could write many more pages about this legislation, but I think you get
the idea. This is not about health care; it is about seizing power and
limiting rights. Article 6 of the Constitution requires the members of
both houses of Congress to “be bound by oath or affirmation to support the
Constitution.” If I was a member of Congress I would not be able to vote
for this legislation or anything like it, without feeling I was violating
that sacred oath or affirmation. If I voted for it anyway, I would hope
the American people would hold me accountable.
For those who might doubt the nature of this threat, I suggest they
consult the source, the US Constitution, and Bill of Rights. There you can
see exactly what we are about to have taken from us.

The Dems don’t give a dang about this analysis. The writer should stick it up his you-know-what. If Dems cared, they would have worked on jobs in 2009, not the gov’t takeover of health. But socialism is why they went into gov’t in the first place, not job creation. Stupid analysis!
If there’s one thing businessmen fear, it’s uncertainty. And that’s one of Obama’s biggest problems; we still don’t know who he is or exactly where he’ll draw the line. Will taxes go up in 2010? Who knows! Will the House push radical Cap & Trade, or radical Card Check? Who knows! Obama has promised to focus on jobs, but he has broken so many promises already, so really…who knows! IMO a lot of capital is sitting on the sidelines waiting this administration out. The best thing for Obama would be for the Reps to take back congress just like in 1994; then maybe we could get some good Centrist legislation passed.
The democratic plan is to redistribute wealth regardless of the consequences. It is the ultimate progessive utopia to steal from the halves and give to the worthless. It’s socialism pure and simple. Anyone that denies it is either a liar, stupid, or lacks any historical knowledge whatsoever. Leveling the playing field is about opportunity not control. To level the playing field by force is tyranny. The government has no right to determine winners and losers. I can’t wait for November 2010.

GDP improvement of 4 to 5%? I don’t believe it. Not with state tax revenues continuing to plummet in the 3rd and 4th quarters.
Great, the economy continues to be worse than we expect, UNEMPLOYMENT is really much worse than 10%. The Democrats have discouraged so many people from looking for work that it makes the Unemployment number look better. And we aren’t even safe. “The System Works”. I guess while we’re surging the internet this year looking for a job we can at least watch the Circus trials of the murdering terrorists who planned 9/11. I’m a little miffed that Obama is spending hundreds of millions of dollars on them that could be spent to help the UNEMPLOYED, but I guess the Democrats have to have their priorites!!!

The issues of legal concern have long since been rewritten or removed to adhere to the Constitution.

That said, the private carrier insurance industry has caused its own demise.
As a business owner with employees the projected rate to cover one person with a family package is estimated at between 23,000 and 28,000 per year in the next 8 to 10 years…nearly 3/4 of the current base salary of our shop workers.
Inasmuch as I would love a free market solution, in the 17 years since this debate was squashed by Republicans in 1993, nothing has been done to change a system seen as broken for over 20 years ago.
Worldwide, looking at countries that do well with supporting free market enterprise and democracies similar to our own, it should be noted that all of them have what the Republicans would demonize as Socialized medicine. All remain competitive free marketers with working democracies…including Canada, Norway, Sweden, Netherlands, UK, France, Germany, Italy, Spain and many others.
It is garbage to claim there is a free market solution when the corporations have repeatedly forced legislation to work in thier favor and against a better system.
Greed will have destroyed them, not legislation.

People who think Obama can’t be criticized because it was really Bush who screwed things up, and therefore Republicans are wrong, just don’t get it. The vast majority of Republicans think BUSH WAS WRONG on the stimulus, bail-outs, etc., that were simply continued, and doubled-down, by Obama. (If there’s a proper criticism, it’s that these people NOW don’t like what Bush did, but didn’t say much when he did it.) To criticize Obama for doing what Bush did, only more so, isn’t inconsistent if you don’t like what Bush did either. As for “knowing how government works,” the economic down-turn coincided almost precisely, not with Bush’s presidency, but with Democratic control of Congress. I’m not saying propinquity is causation, just pointing out that if you’re saying that, then you can’t put all the blame on Republicans.

You are inhaling aren’t you? Even the WSJ can’t find it in the soul to badmouth the Obama economy. If Reagan were in office we’d have an endless parade of sob stories about the rise in homeless people. 700,000 job losses in a swipe is OK when a dem is in office. But tell me how the economy is doing once inflation sets in later this year.
Is it possible that after November 2010, we will see a change in the House Membership? Is it possile that we will not have to hear the lies spewed by Nancy Pelosi and Barney Frank? There are many people who lost HIGH paying jobs and landed on low wage jobs.

Government can never produce real jobs: it can only make jobs that depend on the work of others in the private sector. Government revenue comes from taxes, fees or printing money. Obama and his friends have no idea how to create jobs. Obama has no clue why sky high employee health care taxes, easy as pie unionization of even a small 4 person work force, and mushrooming cap and trade electricity costs prevent small business owners from risking the hire of new employees. Obama wants to kill small business in this country.
To “The Bell”: Sorry, but I disagree with you. If Obama and Democrats in Congress continue their liberal policies of taking over car companies, regulating businesses to , socializing medicine, and pushing a phony climate change agenda, I sincerely want us to fail, and fail miserably, with high unemployment, etc. This may make me sound awful to a lot of people, perhaps even insane, but I have young sons, and I desperately want them to grow up in the same country I did, full of hope and opportunity. And if this type of government appears to work, even for a short time, in my opinion we will be doomed in the long run, because it’s a horrible , headed for socialism. I believe that, although today’s jobs report was bad for the short term, it’s exactly what we need in the long run if we’re to get new leaders (of both parties) and survive as a nation.

Just attended a conference in California addressing the economy and the stimulus. The economist who spoke stated the stimulus has actually worked to this point but not as effectively as possible because banks were withholding $$$ for loans. This (the stimulus) he stated was artificial in nature, but said that is what a stimulus is, and is supposed to do.
Jobs are a lagging indicator, and he spelled out all of the other leading indicators as cause for hope and a likely better recovery than what is projected. We can only hope he is correct.
There was an accountant who also spoke and stated he had no party affilition, and was asked to speak on the current healthcare system. His summary was that the current system is unsustainable for business and gave the circumstances Starbuck and Walmart have found themselves in as examples of this.
Disagree with the “Government can never produce real jobs” comment as too many relatives (teacher, fireman, police, military)and friends (FBI, town police, teacher and county sherrif) work in government in real jobs for that to be true. None, Democrat or Republican, feel their jobs should be privatized.
Wish I had their health plans.
The so-called stimulus was never intended to create jobs. It was intended as pure pork – to the victors belong the spoils. If they had wanted to create jobs, they would have put it all into contruction of boads, bridges, railroads, and nuclear power plants – as China did. This is especially true as the bulk of the unemployed are in construction and heavy manufacturing. Less than 10% of the Porkulus is for construction.
Conclusion – The Great Obama wants unemployment to be high. To increase demand for Socialized Medicine, perhaps???

Author of “The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People” Dr. Steven Covey cites job search expert Robin Ryan, who says that the hardest hit are those “over 40” individuals who have suffered a triple whammy: 1) prematurely unemployed (and least likely to be rehired) 2) impoverished by the housing collapse, with their mortgages under water and 3) with 401K’s that are both untouchable and worth half of what they were two years ago. She has a petition to congress on her blog site “Voice of The Unemployed” that is dead on – and her new book “Over 40 & You’re Hired!” is a timely godsend for these folks.
But…where is the Hope & Change we were promised by the new administration?

Why bad? Unemployment creates more Democrat voters. They will be reaping a bonanza of people looking for the government to fix what the government destroyed -the ability to give them a real job. Go to work for the government,contribute no taxes, work for socialism.
Given the steamy pile he was handed, along with nearly half of America continuing to want to believe they were right about voting for Bush II, which keeps them on the edge of their seats watching Fox News hoping for failures…

But the Democrats have a little trick up their sleeve. Did I read somewhere that they will be hiring a large number of people to conduct the census? Combine that number with an increasing number of people no longer bothering to look for employment, and the apparent percentage of unemployed will soon start to fall.
The only true measure of success right now is the growth in the number of private sector jobs.

You are partly correct sir. The economy did begin to implode in 2007 under the Bush Admin. Let’s ask the question – what was the root cause of the implosion? Shawn – does securitization ring a bell? What about the initial “stimulus” to spur lending to those poor, indigent, discriminated against Americans that were being denied affordable housing? Your people called this stimulus the Community Reinvestment Act. This democrat sponsored bill stated that it was unlawful for lenders to discriminate against borrowers with their strict underwriting guidelines. This sparked off one of the largest crime waves of “lending” in this country’s history. Now – fast forward to 2007, 8 years after the law was in-acted and what do you have? Good luck with that, Shawn.
What small business will hire someone for 32 hours + per week when that is the threshold for ObamaCare tax of $600 per month? Hire two part timers.
This recession will be around a long time. Obama is nuts.

Tax rates and debt have a correlation but stating that tax rates were higher and debt lower at some point in US History does not take into account myriads of other factors such as spending, spending and spending, inflation and population growth. Simply saying higher taxes means less debt is to simplistic and stated by someone who probably has no more than 3 credit hours in economics or history. Oh yeah and things were so much better 30 years ago under Jimmy Carter?? LMAO. Seriously? Were do you get your liberal self denying talking points? 30 years ago, lets see Carter sold the Panama Canal to the Chinese, Carter surrendered to the Islamofacists in Iran, Carter prevented the recycling of nuclear fuel, higher unemployment than now, higher inflation and oh year 18% inflation. Whenever millions of people lose their jobs, the last thing on my mind is whether or not this event may be bad news for the shady career of Obama or of the clique of do-nothing-but-steals with whom he surrounds himself. His idea of bad news and the way his policies hit America when its down are signs that what matter to him doesn’t matter to real people. Every bit as little of a hoot do I give for the crocodile-tear-shedding anti-social felons leveraging other people’s lives on behalf of the Republican side, same story different party, both sides being culpable for the state America is in today.
When normal people’s livelihood goes up in smoke due to the antics of crooks in Washington DC, the least of their concerns will be whether there’s a dime’s worth of difference between so-called major parties – because there isn’t.
So here’s an off-the-wall musing: what if some “national emergency” happens, oh, maybe about mid-October, and the government in the majority suspends elections scheduled for November until “normalization”? Or even better, what if the government in the majority manages to pass a Federal voter registration scheme which suddenly, dramatically increases classes of voters (felons, anyone?) which would benefit the government holding the majority?
amazingly enough slick obama has already figured out how to make the job numbers look good by the midterms. of course there very temporary jobs, for union members, but still jobs. read an article the other day about the census bureau hiring a record number of census takers for the 2010 census. something like 1.4 million. he will probably hire just enough each month to actually make unemployment look like a positive gain each month. of course in 2011 they all magically disappear. but it looks good for the mid terms doesnt it.
but on a side not , dont know why people always say democrats hate the rich. they dont after all the majority of the top 2% are democrats, and believe me they dont hate themselves. gates ring a bell, how about soros. for thast matter the majority of hollywood, most professional sports players. what side of the political spectrum you think they all fall into. theres your top 2%. democrats dont hate the rich, they hate the middle class that is trying to become rich. look at when bear sterns fell. when they were out doing interviews they asked employees heading out the door. one said the reason they let them fail was because there 80% democrats working there.

All with oppressive taxes, dysfunctional governments, and moribund economies, their industrial bases destroyed, their morale crushed, their native populations ever dwindling, not replacing their numbers. Their citizens enjoy nothing close to what Americans would recognize as freedom of speech. But hooray! They all have rationed medical care! So why do the ones who can afford it travel to the wicked evil United States of America if they become seriously ill?
Oops, I almost forgot another wonderful advantage those countries have: lots and lots of peace-loving, unassimilable Moslems.
In 2006 midterms, Democrats tool over Congress, by 2008, the economy had begun a hard slide, and the blame Bush game was in full play. The results were to elect more Democrats in 2008. In 2009, Democrats spent the year blaming Bush, and bringing us back from the brink. Now it is 2010, and they will continue to blame Bush and the Republicans. We have heard Republicans called the party of “No” all through 2009, but with the super majorities for Democrats in both houses of Congress, the Republicans do not have any power to stop any bill that the Democrats can agree about.
Therefore, with complaints from Democrats about spending being out of control under Bush and the Republicans, (and they were right), what do they do? They spend 10 times more, telling us that we can spend our way out of debt. When we needed jobs, they gave us health care. When we needed less regulation, they gave us more regulations (for jobs, “EPA”). When we ask them to listen, they told us to “shut the hell up”. When we told them there was no global warming, they wanted to give billions to third world countries (Thank You, China, India, and Brazil, for not agreeing with Obama). When we needed less taxes, the Democrats raised our taxes. The Democrats keep telling us they know what is best for us, and we are not smart enough to know what is best for ourselves.
So, I, for one, will not be voting for any of these Democrats in November, but that does not mean I will be voting for Republicans either. I will be voting, but only for those who will listen to the concerns of the people, a majority of the people, who have been ignored far to long. I also believe there are millions of voters, who think as I do. We are tired of political correctness and liberalism. So, before all “Hope” is lost, we must have “Change”. We simply need representatives to do the will of the people, the Majority of the people, and this President and Congress are not listening.

Are people hapless victims that watch shows and are unduly influenced or do they watch shows with which they agree?
The surge in popularity of the Fox Channel is in part due to the urgency of the issues. If people were unconcerned they would not waste their time watching political shows, (nor reading blogs like this).
There is no sinister agenda, people are not being duped. Americans are just not far left enough for this administration to be long term.
It is clear that these comments are coming from individuals that are very frustrated with
everything in life- and have found a receptacle to place their frustration in – Obama and the Democrats. You need to remember that is was the mismanagement of 8 years of Republican leadership, and foolish policies like ” Lets go out an spend some money to stimulate the economy” that got us unto this mess in the first place. Remember Iraq and it’s “Weapons of mass destruction” and the war that resulted ? Blame this on Republican strategy. I do not want a hillbilly like Rush Limbaugh or a slick, spit shine shoe salesman like Mitt Romney running the country. I want pragmatic, thoughtful leadership, the type that the world respects, and the type that reflects the high ideals that this country represents. I see this in Barack Obama and Joe Biden.
It’a amazing that Obama is bankrupting America and HE can’t see it. Along with Pelosi, Reid and the rest of the Democrats—they just don’t get it!! It’s all about GETTING EVEN with the Republicans and “to Hell with the American Taxpayers and JOBS.
On the other hand, MR. Obama is blaming the Security Agencies for NOT sharing “intelligence” between the agencies, YET the Democrats cannot “share” information with the Republicans regarding Heathcare; OR share Healthcare information with the American people.
What is wrong with this administration is the fact that
America’s financial stability is tied directly to jobs and our two political parties working together, NOT BRIBES to Senators to obtain votes with taxpayer money. Where is the U.S. SUPREME COURT; to propect the laws of the Constitution??? Bribery is a crime, except in Washington D.C.????????
And I quote, “Give me liberty or give me death”.

As a former journalist, I disagree with the author of this article that the media will play up the bad economic news. I believe just the opposite will occur — they will look for silver linings and trumpet them for the Dems. As a former campaign manager for numerous legislative, Congressional, and statewide campaigns, I’m optimistic Republicans will pick up seats in ’10 in spite of always having to fight the referee (the media) and their opponents (the Dems) when they get into the ring. However, the momentum is peaking way too early for a landslide similar to ’94 — at this point. It’s possible Dems could do some unpopular things in ’10 which would increase anger (unlikely) or (more likely) there could be enterprising journalists who discover some shenanigans in the health care “reform” or (even more likely) terrorists could bomb again on our soil, which tends to rally people around the president but in this case could be used by Republicans to argue for more control to make the country more safe.
I LEARNED WHEN I WAS FIVE YEARS OLD [1938] THAT YOU NEVER IMPORT MORE THEN YOU EXPORT, NEVER PRINT PAPER MONEY WITH OUT BACKING, NEVER SELL YOUR NATRAL RESOURSES AND BUY THEM BACK AS FINISHED PRODUCTS. WE ARE ALL AT FAULT FOR THIS. WE BUY WHAT IS THE CHEAPEST, NOT WHAT IS MADE IN THE U S A. WE GROW BETTER RICE IN THE U S A THEN THE JAPANESE. WE CAN SHIP IT TO JAPAN AND SELL IT FOR LESS THEN THEIR RICE. THEY WILL NOT BUY IT AS THEY ARE MORE PATPRIOTIC THEN WE ARE.
Even the job loss figure is worse than reported. The jobs report is based upon the “non-farm payrolls” report. The broader “employment level” report, which includes the agriculture sector, shows a loss of jobs in December of 589,000, the third worst monthly job loss of 2009.
Obama continues to sit on his hands, doing nothing to restore a balance of trade and bring our manufacturing jobs back home. No wonder unemployment is so high.
