Each of this week’s Best of Britain photos touches on how events from the past continue to make their effects felt.  Whether it’s people remembering the victims of the 7/7 London Bombings, tennis fans hoping for a Brit to once again win Wimbledon, or actors breaking a centuries-old Shakespearean taboo, each photo is a small example of living with history.

Also included are photos of anti-war protesters, an unprecedented treasure find, an art exhibit featuring the Queen and a wall-building competition, done the old fashioned way.

This week’s Best of Britain photos highlight a week of competitions and celebrations.

The first couple of photos are from sporting events high on the minds of Britons: Wimbledon and the World Cup. Also included is a photo of John Isner’s final victory at the end of an epic record-setting 11 hour 5 minute match against Nicolas Mahut.

News is always happening around the world.  However, due to resource limitations, news organizations aren’t always able to cover everything.  But with the advent of citizen journalism, ordinary people can step in and help fill the gaps, whether it’s in countries that have been heavy in the news like Iran, or ones not quite on the radar like this photo in Azerbaijan.

Your View contributor Abbas Atilay captured a dramatic moment during a protest for free parliament elections in Baku, the capital city of Azerbaijan, a country located in the Caucus mountains region in Asia.  There is determination both in the face of the protester and in the faces of the police who’re arresting him.

This week’s Best of Britain photos show the many different angles of people’s pride in England.

With the World Cup in full swing, one photo shows a house wrapped with fabric in the shape of St. George’s Cross ahead of the match against the United States.  While another shows a man with a British flag being held back by police during a counter-protest.

The first two photos in this week’s Best of Britain show a possible future, and a touch of the past.  The first photo shows a sculptor putting the finishing touches on an amazingly realistic wax representation of Cristiano Ronaldo, someone England had to face off against in the last World Cup, and may do so again.

The second photo is of a snowboarder enjoying the last bit of snow on Cairngorm Mountain in Scotland.

This week in photos is bookended by a shooting spree and a serial killer.  One photo shows the victim of a man who gunned down 12 people in Britain’s worst shooting spree in years.  The other from the search for human remains in a West Yorkshire river. A criminology student was charged with the killing of three sex workers in the area.

In between are photos of protests and celebrations, an unbelievable art exhibition, and a small flotilla commemorating the 70th anniversary of Dunkirk.

Tensions have been high in Thailand as anti-government “red shirt” protesters face off against pro-government forces and supporters.

Your View contributor Jeffrey Liam took this photo of fishing boats stranded inland after Typhoon Ketsana struck Vietnam last September.

Liam’s photo has a well-composed balance of elements and color.  The muted earth colors of the sand and the woman’s shirt are contrasted by the punched-up blue of the sky and the turquoise of the ship’s hull.  Her eyes also help lead the viewer’s attention to the detailed planking of the ship.
