CNRL profit jumps; sees oil discounts easing

CALGARY, Alberta, March 8 (Reuters) – Canadian Natural
Resources Ltd expects the bargain-basement prices it
now garners for its oil to improve over the next few months as
spring maintenance at refineries ends and a new pipeline link to
the U.S. Gulf Coast opens up.

Canadian Natural, which reported its fourth-quarter results
climbed back into the black following a big writedown last year,
has struggled along with the rest of Canada’s oil industry with
deep discounts due to surging production, tight pipeline
capacity and some unplanned refinery outages.

Enbridge shuts part of key U.S. oil pipeline after fire

CALGARY, Alberta (Reuters) – Enbridge Inc shut down a key segment of the main Canada-to-United States oil pipeline for an undetermined period on Saturday after a deadly vehicle accident caused a fire at an Illinois pumping station.

The Canadian company said it was forced to shut down the 318,000 barrel-a-day “14/64″ line between Superior, Wisconsin, and Griffith, Indiana, after the early-morning collision, which caused a blaze and a spill of crude near New Lenox, Illinois. That’s equivalent to about 3 percent of total U.S. imports.

Canada oil sands firms join in effort to get greener

CALGARY, Alberta, March 1 (Reuters) – A dozen of the
largest Canadian oil sands developers have banded together to
develop and share environmental technology as they seek to
persuade critics at home, in the United States and in Europe
that they are doing all they can to clean up operations.

Suncor Energy Inc, Royal Dutch Shell Plc,
Canadian Natural Resources Ltd and Statoil ASA
are among the companies that have agreed to collaborate on
dealing with such problems as greenhouse gas emissions, water
contamination, land disturbance and the spread of toxic tailings
ponds, all sore spots with environmental groups.
