Volcker- U.S. must maintain confidence in dollar

TORONTO, Oct 6 (Reuters) – The United States must preserve
confidence in the dollar even as it looks at a variety of ways
to combat the economic slowdown, Paul Volcker, special adviser
to U.S. President Barack Obama, said on Wednesday.

The former Federal Reserve Chairman said it is difficult to
find any sector of the U.S. economy that has any “spark”, so
authorities should be examining what fiscal and monetary tools
they have available.

TMX plans new alternative trading system

TORONTO, Oct 4 (Reuters) – TMX Group (X.TO: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz), operator of
the Toronto Stock Exchange, said on Monday it has submitted
regulatory filings to set up an alternative trading system to
offer clients more competitive pricing.

The new ATS, called TMX Select, will offer an alternative
venue to the main TSX and will target specific traders who use
certain strategies, said Kevan Cowan, president of TSX Markets
and group head of equities.

BlackRock’s Doll-US data lowers odds of double-dip

TORONTO, Sept 23 (Reuters) – A string of decent economic
data has lowered the probability of a double-dip recession in
the United States, the chief stock picker for the world’s
biggest asset manager said on Thursday.

Bob Doll, chief equity strategist for fundamental equities
at BlackRock Inc (BLK.N: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz), said the “less bad” economic data has
been enough to alter his position slightly.

TMX Group plans new “dark” orders for stock trading

TORONTO, Sept 22 (Reuters) – TMX Group Inc (X.TO: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz) plans to
launch new “dark order” types so buyers and sellers can match
trades anonymously, the operator of the Toronto Stock Exchange
and TSX Venture Exchange said on Wednesday.

The dark orders, expected to be released in November, will
essentially create pools of dark liquidity to provide for new
trading options, said Kevan Cowan, president of TSX Markets and
group head of equities.

Canada’s S&P/TSX to edge higher on growth outlook

TORONTO (Reuters) – Canada’s main stock index is seen edging higher by year-end and will likely extend gains into the middle of 2011, boosted by steady domestic growth and easing concerns about the global economy, a Reuters poll found.

The Toronto Stock Exchange’s S&P/TSX composite index was seen ending the year at 12,225, according to the median forecast of 20 analysts and fund managers, published on Thursday.

How much is too much when actors research their roles?

Actor Aaron Eckhart, who plays Howie Corbett in John Cameron Mitchell’s “Rabbit Hole,” said he may have gone too far to research his character.

“I did attend one bereavement class and that was probably unethical, I would have to say, because you really feel like you’re taking advantage of people who are laying it all out … you just feel like you’re a liar so I didn’t do that again,” he told reporters at a press conference during the Toronto International Film Festival.

TSX stumbles on lower oil, weak data

TORONTO, Sept 15 (Reuters) – Toronto’s main stock index
fell on Wednesday morning after three days of gains as oil
prices slipped and weak data splashed cold water on recent
optimism about economic recovery.

The index’s energy sector, down 0.6 percent, dropped as
U.S. crude oil futures fell as traders expected Enbridge’s

TSX rises as gold price pushes higher

TORONTO, Sept 14 (Reuters) – Toronto’s main stock index
rose on Tuesday morning with strong gold prices and more robust
than expected U.S. retail sales data allowing it to generate
moderate gains.

Gold miners led the way. Barrick Gold (ABX.TO: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz) was up 2.6
percent at C$46.56, and Goldcorp Inc (G.TO: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz) climbed 3 percent
to C$43.86.
