Ontario govt eyes Toronto casino to boost revenues

TORONTO, March 12 (Reuters) – Ontario’s government
cleared the path on Monday for the opening of new Toronto-area
casino as part of a broader plan by the debt-ridden Canadian
province boost its revenues from gambling and lotteries.

The Toronto-area casino, which would still require a
business study and local approval, was one of several proposals
from the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corp (OLG) which the
government-owned corporation said could boost its revenues by
C$1 billion ($1 billion) annually.

C$ edges lower on China data

TORONTO, March 12 (Reuters) – The Canadian dollar
eased back against its U.S. counterpart on Monday as weak
Chinese export data weighed on commodities and trading thinned
out at the start of spring break holidays and ahead of Tuesday’s
U.S. Federal Reserve meeting.

Data released over the weekend by China, showed the
commodity-consuming giant posted its largest trade deficit in at
least a decade, fanning concerns about the world’s second
largest economy.

C$ firms as US jobs data outweighs Canadian

TORONTO, March 9 (Reuters) – The Canadian dollar
firmed against the greenback on Friday morning as the market
looked past weak domestic employment numbers and was encouraged
by stronger-than-expected U.S. jobs data, a further signal of
recovery in Canada’s biggest trading partner.

“We’re in a state now where the Canadian dollar is more
severely affected – and positively affected in this case – by
U.S. data than it is by our own,” said Firas Askari, head of
foreign exchange trading at BMO Capital Markets

Canadian housing shows strength as prices, starts rise

TORONTO, March 8 (Reuters) – The Canadian housing
market continued to show signs of strength on Thursday as data
revealed new home prices rose for the 10th straight month in
January and housing starts climbed in February despite
expectations the sector will slow this year.

Prices of new homes edged up 0.1 percent in January from
December, the 10th consecutive monthly increase, mainly on
strength in Calgary and Vancouver, Statistics Canada said on
Thursday.

C$ slides on China, Europe data

TORONTO, March 5 (Reuters) – The Canadian dollar
weakened against its U.S. counterpart on Monday as commodities
fell after data showed China cut its growth target and Europe’s
private sector slowed last month, reigniting concerns about the
strength of the global economy.

Riskier assets like stocks were hit after Asian powerhouse
China lowered its growth target to 7.5 percent, while euro zone
surveys of purchasing managers fell from initial estimates,
driving the euro to a two-week low against the dollar.

TSX slides to 10-day low on oil, gold

TORONTO, March 2 (Reuters) – Canadian stocks hit a
10-day low on Friday as resource issues slumped on weaker oil
and gold prices and as optimism over progress in Europe’s debt
crisis faded after Spain set a deficit target bigger than
allowed by the euro zone’s new fiscal pact.

Six of the TSX’s 10 main sectors were lower, led by the
heavyweight materials and energy groups, which both slid more
than 1 percent.

TSX down as resources hit by lower oil, gold

TORONTO, March 2 (Reuters) – Toronto’s main stock
index was lower at midday on Friday as a stronger U.S. dollar
pressured oil and gold prices, hurting resource issues.

Six of the index’s 10 main sectors were lower, with the
heavyweight materials and energy groups leading the way, down
0.7 percent and 0.6 percent respectively. Miners and oil and gas
producers slumped as gold and oil prices slid alongside a drop
in the euro against the greenback.

TSX jumps on bank profits, resource gains

TORONTO, March 1 (Reuters) – Canadian stocks rose on
Thursday following a sharp selloff the previous session,
encouraged by stronger-than-expected earnings from Canada’s top
two banks, surging oil prices, and upbeat economic data from
China and the United States.

Royal Bank of Canada and Toronto-Dominion Bank
pushed the index’s financial sector up 1.1 percent after
the banking heavyweights’ earnings topped estimates and both
raised their dividends.

TSX jumps on bank earnings, U.S., China data

TORONTO, March 1 (Reuters) – Toronto’s main stock
index was higher on Thursday midday, encouraged by earnings from
Canada’s top two banks and upbeat economic data from China and
the United States.

Royal Bank of Canada and Toronto-Dominion Bank
pushed the index’s financial sector up 1.4 percent after
the banking heavyweights’ earnings topped estimates and both
raised their dividends. Shares of RBC, the country’s largest
bank, shot up 3 percent to C$57.37, and No. 2 bank TD was up 1.9
percent at C$82.34.

Canada manufacturing PMI shows modest Feb growth

TORONTO, March 1 (Reuters) – The pace of growth in
Canadian manufacturing picked up modestly in February after
weakening the previous month, helped by a pickup in output and
new orders despite a fall in export demand.

The RBC Canadian Manufacturing Purchasing Managers’ Index,
released on Thursday, edged up to a reading of 51.8 in February
from 50.6 in January. While the index was above the 50-point
mark that separates expansion from contraction, it was still the
second weakest since the survey began in October 2010.
