Costa Rica revel in unfamiliar dark side

By Karolos Grohmann

(Reuters) – Costa Rica proved on Sunday they were not just an exciting attacking team but could also defend when they knocked Greece out of the World Cup 5-3 on penalties after playing with 10 men for more than an hour.

The Central Americans took a page out of Greece’s book and beat the Europeans at their own ugly defensive game, matching them tackle for tackle and relying on several superb saves by man-of-the-match goalkeeper Keylor Navas.

Baby-faced assassin Rodriguez makes Colombia forget Falcao

BELO HORIZONTE Brazil (Reuters) – Colombia’s sensational midfielder James Rodriguez struck twice in a 2-0 win over Uruguay in the last 16 on Saturday to move top of the World Cup scorers list and stake a claim for player of the tournament.

When Colombia arrived in Brazil without injured key forward Radamel Falcao, few would have counted on baby-faced Rodriguez, who has now scored in each of his team’s three group games and their knockout match, to successfully replace him.

Chile’s referee concerns an insult to Brazil: Federation

BELO HORIZONTE Brazil (Reuters) – Chile’s concerns over the impartiality of the referee for their World Cup round of 16 game against Brazil on Saturday are an insult to the people of the host nation, Brazil’s Football Federation said on Friday.

Chile players were repeatedly asked this week whether they were concerned about the referee and his ability to be impartial in a game that could potentially see the hosts eliminated from a tournament they are favored to win.
