Sloppy German finishing leaves Euro 2016 champagne on ice

By Karolos Grohmann

(Reuters) – Germany coach Joachim Loew rued his team’s missed chances in their surprise 1-0 Euro 2016 qualifying defeat to Ireland on Thursday, which delayed any qualification celebrations by a few days.

The Group D leaders, who only needed a point in Dublin, are on 19, one ahead of Poland and the Irish, who play each other on Sunday. Three-time European champions Germany have a seemingly easier task at home against Georgia.

Klopp move to Liverpool could be a hit for both parties

BERLIN (Reuters) – Juergen Klopp, who became Liverpool manager on Thursday, could not have found a more fitting club to take his successful coaching career to the next level.

Twice a Bundesliga champion with Borussia Dortmund, who he also steered to the Champions League final in 2013, Klopp finds a similar situation at Liverpool to that he encountered at the Ruhr valley club when he joined in 2008.

Trigger-happy Lewandowski keen to extend sizzling run

By Karolos Grohmann

(Reuters) – Bayern Munich forward Robert Lewandowski hopes to extend his remarkable recent scoring run when the German champions host his former club Borussia Dortmund in the Bundesliga’s showcase derby on Sunday, and stretch their growing lead at the top.

Undefeated Bayern are again threatening to run away towards a record fourth consecutive league title even before the winter break, having already carved out a four-point lead after seven matches over second-placed Dortmund. Victory against them would stretch it even further.
