Preview – IOC hopes sweeping Olympic changes to mark Games revival

MONACO (Reuters) – When the International Olympic Committee members vote on 40 recommendations next week to change the way the Games are awarded and run they will be saying ‘yes’ to the biggest single overhaul of the Olympics in decades.

The idea behind the recommendations IOC President Thomas Bach has been frantically pushing since taking over in September 2013 is to breath new life into the world’s biggest multi-sports event that has lost some of its lustre in recent years.

Klopp has no thoughts of leaving after Dortmund go bottom

BERLIN (Reuters) – Borussia Dortmund coach Juergen Klopp said he had no plans to jump ship after his side dropped down to last place in the Bundesliga following their 2-0 defeat by Eintracht Frankfurt on Sunday.

It is the first time since 2007-8 that Dortmund, Bundesliga champions in 2011 and both league and German Cup winners in 2012, have been in bottom place but Klopp, who also led the club to the Champions League final only 18 months ago, said they were ready to pick themselves up again.

Record-equalling Bayern storm 10 points clear

BERLIN (Reuters) – Bayern Munich scraped past Hertha Berlin 1-0 courtesy of an Arjen Robben goal to stretch their lead at the top of the table to 10 points and equal a Bundesliga record for goals conceded after 13 games.

The champions never hit top form but hardly needed to because they were up against a toothless Hertha who rarely ventured out of their half.

German DFB chief Niersbach to run for FIFA ExCo spot

BERLIN (Reuters) – German FA (DFB) chief Wolfgang Niersbach will run for membership at world soccer governing body FIFA’s executive committee next year to replace outgoing European Theo Zwanziger, he said on Friday.

Niersbach, who has been critical of both FIFA’s handling of an ethics report on corruption for the awarding of the 2018 and 2022 World Cup as well as picking Qatar for 2022, said Germany should keep its voice in the powerful decision-making body.
