LOS ANGELES (Reuters) – Netflix Inc, riding high after another strong earnings report, is in better shape to raise prices for new U.S. customers to its movie and TV streaming service than it was in 2011, when a price hike sent its stock into a downward spiral.

On its side is the addition of award-winning original series like “House of Cards” and an expanded library of TV shows and films that have made it a proven force in Hollywood with 35.6 million U.S. subscribers.

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) – Netflix Inc added more than 2.3 million U.S. customers in the fourth quarter, sending its shares up 17 percent in after-hours trading, and said it was testing different pricing plans for its monthly TV and movie streaming service.

The world’s largest video streaming company on Wednesday reported net income of $48 million for the quarter, up from $8 million a year ago. Earnings-per-share were 79 cents, Netflix said in a statement, beating the 66 cents average forecast of analysts surveyed by Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.

U.S. network NBC to return to live musicals with ‘Peter Pan’

LOS ANGELES, Jan 19 (Reuters) – U.S. TV network NBC will air
another live performance of a Broadway musical, “Peter Pan,” on
Dec. 4, hoping to repeat the ratings success of last year’s
broadcast of “The Sound of Music Live.”

The musicals are part of the Comcast-owned
network’s strategy to draw audiences to live events, a defense
against later viewing on digital video recorders which is less
valuable to advertisers.

Sony, Warner Bros. lead studios in nominations for Oscar gold

LOS ANGELES, Jan 16 (Reuters) – Sony Pictures Entertainment
and Time Warner Inc’s Warner Bros. led
Hollywood studios competing for Academy Awards with 21
nominations each, grabbing publicity that could provide a box
office bounce for their contending films including “American
Hustle” and “Gravity.”

The recognition on Thursday from the Academy of Motion
Picture Arts and Sciences was especially sweet for Sony, which
came under heavy criticism in 2013 from activist investor Daniel
Loeb after two big-budget bombs over the summer.

Netflix shares drop after court tosses Internet traffic rules

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) – Shares of video streaming service Netflix Inc fell more than 1 percent on Wednesday, a day after a U.S. court decision that could let broadband providers charge companies for faster access to content delivered over the Internet.

On Tuesday, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit rejected federal “net neutrality” rules that required Internet providers to treat all web traffic equally.

Video service Hulu adds new shows to original series slate

LOS ANGELES, Jan 8 (Reuters) – Video streaming website Hulu
is expanding its slate of original programming in 2014 and will
introduce four new series including reality TV satire “The
Hotwives of Orlando” and supernatural comedy “Deadbeat.”

Hulu on Wednesday announced it also will release new
episodes this year of six other exclusive series, including
comedian Seth Meyers’ animated superhero show “The Awesomes,”
and “Moone Boy,” starring “Bridesmaids” actor Chris O’Dowd.
