Fox, NBC secure ad rate hikes for fall shows: sources

(Reuters) – U.S. broadcast networks Fox and NBC are close to wrapping up their advance sales for commercial time for the upcoming fall season and have narrowly beaten analysts’ expectations with rate increases of as much as 7 percent over last year, sources familiar with the negotiations said on Wednesday.

News Corp-owned Fox won a 5 percent to 7 percent increase from advertisers despite a drop in overall viewership, one source told Reuters.

June 12 (Reuters) – U.S. broadcast networks Fox and NBC are

Disney’s ESPN to close U.S. 3D cable TV network this year

June 12 (Reuters) – Walt Disney Co’s TV sports network, ESPN, said it will shut its 3D cable channel in the United States, ending a three-year experiment after sports fans failed to embrace the technology in their homes.

ESPN launched the 3D cable channel in 2010 and will close the channel by the end of the year, said ESPN spokeswoman Katina Arnold. It presented 3D broadcasts of college football games and the Masters golf tournament, among other offerings.

(Reuters) – When Walt Disney Co introduced its latest video game, Infinity, to the gaming faithful this week at the annual E3 gaming conference, it rented a Los Angeles movie theater to show 30-minute clips of upcoming films and hosted a party with the glitz it usually reserves for its blockbuster movie wannabes.

It shows just how much the company is counting on Infinity – whose players can for the first time mix together characters from Disney’s different franchises – to help turn around one part of the media giant that stubbornly refuses to turn a profit.

Disney hikes prices at U.S. theme parks

(Reuters) – Walt Disney Co raised single-day admission prices as much as 6.7 percent over the weekend at its theme parks in Florida and California, hikes that are more than five times the rate of inflation.

Higher prices for Disney’s theme parks have become an annual tradition. The theme parks and resorts unit provided 20 percent of the company’s overall profits in the financial year that ended in September 2012, second only to the company’s media unit that includes the behemoth sports channel ESPN.

‘Fast & Furious’ rolls over Will Smith’s ‘After Earth’

June 2 (Reuters) – Car chase sequel “Fast & Furious 6″ kept
racing at U.S. and Canadian box offices, outpacing rival movies
for a second straight weekend and finishing far in front of Will
Smith’s new sci-fi film “After Earth.”

“Fast & Furious” racked up $34.5 million from Friday through
Sunday, according to studio estimates. The sixth installment in
the billion-dollar franchise takes the action to London, where
stars Vin Diesel and Dwyane Johnson lead their crew on a mission
to take down an international ring of mercenary drivers.

‘Fast & Furious’ leads ‘Hangover’ in big-budget movie battle

May 26 (Reuters) – The speed demons of “Fast & Furious 6″
raced ahead of the hard-partying “Hangover” gang in a battle
between two male-oriented movie franchises, setting up the car
chase sequel for a big holiday weekend win at U.S. and Canadian
box offices.

“Fast & Furious 6″ rang up an estimated $98.5 million in
domestic ticket sales from Friday through Sunday and was
speeding toward $122.5 million by the end of Monday’s U.S.
Memorial Day holiday, distributor Universal Pictures projected.

‘Star Trek’ sequel tops weekend box office in North America

(Reuters) – “Star Trek Into Darkness,” the newest installment in the classic intergalactic franchise, blasted to the top of movie box office charts with $70.6 million in weekend ticket sales at theaters in the United States and Canada.

The new 3D voyage for Captain Kirk and the crew of the Starship Enterprise knocked mighty “Iron Man 3″ into second place, while the Marvel superhero sequel grabbed $35.2 million. Jazz Age drama “The Great Gatsby” finished third with $23.4 million, according to studio estimates.

ABC bets TV viewers will marvel at superhero show

May 14 (Reuters) – Walt Disney Co’s ABC network is
tapping its blockbuster “Avengers” franchise for a new TV show,
looking to reverse a ratings decline that put it last of the
four largest networks among audiences coveted by advertisers.

The network is so confident in “Marvel’s Agents of
S.H.I.E.L.D.” that it scheduled the show on Tuesdays at 8 p.m.
eastern time, where it will face off against TV’s top-rated
scripted show, CBS’ crime juggernaut “NCIS.”
