Ronaldo leads Real rout, Bale misses home debut

MADRID (Reuters) – Gareth Bale injured himself in the warm up and was forced to wait for his Bernabeu debut but Real Madrid did not miss him as Cristiano Ronaldo scored twice in a 4-1 win over Getafe in La Liga on Sunday.

The world’s most expensive player was set to start against Getafe, having only featured in two away games since joining for 100 million euros ($135 million)three weeks ago, but was forced to make way for another new recruit, Isco just before kickoff.

Barca second best in possession for first time since 2008

MADRID (Reuters) – Possession-kings Barcelona had less than 50 percent of the ball for the first time in five years when they won 4-0 at Rayo Vallecano in La Liga on Saturday.

The Spanish champions always take pride in their technical ability and the amount of possession they enjoy but Barca have been undergoing something of a change in strategy under new coach Gerardo Martino.

Spain striker Pedro took his tally for the season to five goals, while Cesc Fabregas netted the fourth, after Rayo had made life difficult for the visitors becoming the first team to edge them for possession in a match in five years.

Soccer-Arda inspires Atletico to Zenit win

MADRID, Sept 18 (Reuters) – Atletico Madrid proved they are going to be a tough nut to crack in the Champions League as Arda Turan rallied them to a 3-1 home win over Zenit St Petersburg in their opening Group G game on Wednesday.

The Turkish midfielder scored the second in the 64th minute and set up substitute Leo Baptistao for the third in the 80th, after Zenit had fought back strongly to level at 1-1 early in the second half with a thunderous shot from Hulk.
