Soccer-Isco hopes signing for Real will boost World Cup chances

MADRID, July 3 (Reuters) – Real Madrid’s first signing of the Carlo Ancelotti era, Isco, said he hoped joining the nine-time European champions would boost his chances of making the Spain squad for next year’s World Cup finals.

The Spanish Under-21 playmaker, who was joined from Malaga for some 30 million Euros, completed a medical and signed a five-year contract before being presented in front of around 5000 cheering fans at a sun-soaked Bernabeu on Wednesday.

Ancelotti takes reins at Real Madrid

MADRID (Reuters) – Real Madrid have appointed Italian Carlo Ancelotti as their new coach on a three-year contract, the Spanish club said on Tuesday.

The former Paris St Germain manager will be presented on Wednesday and will replace Jose Mourinho who left at the end of last season to join Chelsea.

Valeron bids tearful farewell as Deportivo relegated

MADRID (Reuters) – Former Spanish international Juan Carlos Valeron, one of La Liga’s most popular players, was unable to control his emotions as he bid farewell to Deportivo La Coruna after they succumbed to relegation again on Saturday.

The 37-year-old playmaker has been at the club for 13 years but could do little as they lost 1-0 at home to Real Sociedad slipping down from 17th into the bottom three on the final day, to make a swift return to the second division.

Barca reach 100 points, Sociedad grab fourth spot

MADRID (Reuters) – Champions Barcelona matched La Liga’s record tally of 100 points in a season and achieved a club-best total of 115 goals after sweeping aside Malaga 4-1 at the Nou Camp in their final game on Saturday.

In his first campaign Barca coach Tito Vilanova equalled Real Madrid’s points haul set under Jose Mourinho and beat predecessor Pep Guardiola’s club record of 114 goals in a season, both set last year.
