Soccer-Champions Barca shift attention to transfer market

MADRID, May 12 (Reuters) – Barcelona were turning their attentions to strengthening the squad for next season after second-placed Real Madrid drew 1-1 at Espanyol on Saturday, to gift them a fourth La Liga title in five years.

Barca, who play at third-placed Atletico Madrid later on Sunday, have an unassailable lead in the table as Jose Mourinho’s team trail them by seven points with only two games left to play.

Serena given first serious test in Madrid

MADRID (Reuters) – World number one Serena Williams was given her first serious test at this year’s Madrid Open but recovered from a second set mauling to beat Spaniard Anabel Medina Garrigues 6-3 0-6 7-5 in the quarter-finals on Friday.

It was only the seventh time in her career Serena had lost a set to love, the last time being in November 2008 against her sister Venus at the season-ending WTA Championships in Qatar.

Tennis-Serena given first serious test in Madrid

MADRID, May 10 (Reuters) – World number one Serena Williams was given her first serious test at this year’s Madrid Open as she had to recover from being obliterated in the second set to beat unseeded Spaniard Anabel Medina Garrigues 6-3 0-6 7-5 in the quarter-finals on Friday.

The defending champion at the clay event fought back from 4-2 down in the third set to see off the local favourite, who was cheered on by a partisan crowd at the Magic Box Arena.

Messi returns to put Barca on brink of title

MADRID (Reuters) – Lionel Messi came off the substitute’s bench to score twice and help Barcelona to a 4-2 win at home to Real Betis that moved them to within striking distance of the La Liga title on Sunday.

The World Player of the Year had missed Barca’s humiliating Champions League semi-final exit to Bayern Munich on Wednesday as he recovered from a hamstring problem, but came on in the 56th minute at 2-2 to score the goals that sealed the victory.
