Rebels declare victory in east Ukraine vote on self-rule

DONETSK/SLAVIANSK, Ukraine, May 12 (Reuters) – Pro-Moscow rebels declared a resounding victory in a referendum on self-rule for eastern Ukraine, with some saying that meant independence and others eventual union with Russia as fighting flared in a conflict increasingly out of control.

Organisers in the main region holding the makeshift vote on Sunday said nearly 90 percent had voted in favour.

Obama says U.S. will announce new sanctions on Russia on Monday

MANILA (Reuters) – President Barack Obama said the United States will on Monday impose new sanctions on Russia targeting individuals and companies over the crisis in Ukraine, a move expected to be followed by separate punitive measures from the European Union.

Obama said the latest sanctions would restrict some high-tech exports to Russia‚Äôs military, and he warned that a future phase could bring broader “sectoral” sanctions against Russian industries such as banking and defence if Moscow waged further “aggression” against Ukraine.

Azarenka overcomes Ivanovic to reach final

CARLSBAD, California (Reuters) – Top seed Victoria Azarenka overcame a lapse of concentration to defeat Ana Ivanovic 6-0 4-6 6-3 and reach the final of the Carlsbad Open on Saturday.

Playing in her first tournament since injuring her knee and hip at Wimbledon, Azarenka dug herself out of a second set hole to subdue the 2008 French Open champion, who also ran hot and cold throughout.

Cibulkova takes revenge on Radwanska to win Stanford title

STANFORD, California (Reuters) – Dominika Cibulkova avenged an embarrassing defeat to Agnieszka Radwanska by overhauling the top-seeded Pole 3-6 6-4 6-4 to win the Bank of the West Classic on Sunday.

Earlier this year in the Sydney final, Radwanska handed the Slovakian a humiliating 6-0 6-0 loss which Cibulkova said affected her for weeks.

Twitter reinstates British journalist after outcry

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) – Twitter Inc reinstated a British journalist’s account on Tuesday after an outcry over his suspension for posting an NBC-Universal executive’s email address on the service threatened to tarnish the company’s reputation.

Twitter banned Guy Adams, a Los Angeles correspondent for The Independent newspaper, on Monday after he tweeted the work email address of NBC’s Olympics division president Gary Zenkel.

Twitter suspends reporter’s account for NBC tweet

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) – Twitter Inc and NBC Universal’s move to suppress a British reporter’s tweets related to the network’s Olympics coverage may have backfired after the incident became fodder for Twitter chatter around the world on Monday.

The microblogging service suspended Guy Adams, the Los Angeles correspondent for London-based daily The Independent, after he sent a tweet on Friday revealing NBC Olympics President Gary Zenkel’s email address.
