NEC plans $1.5 bln share sale after losses

TOKYO, Nov 6 (Reuters) – NEC Corp <6701.T>, Japan’s biggest
PC maker, plans to raise 133.9 billion yen ($1.5 billion) via a
share issue to help restore its battered capital base as it
scrambles to cut costs in search of growth.

News of the capital raising, tipped by sources on Thursday,
sent the firm’s shares — which have shed 60 percent over the

Japan tech firms signal no recovery yet

TOKYO, Oct 28 (Reuters) – Results from Japanese technology
groups such as Fujitsu <6702.T> and NEC Electronics <6723.T>
indicated the worst is not yet over for the struggling sector
as the sector grapples with sluggish demand.

NEC Electronics <6723.T>, Fujitsu’s rival in high end
chips, expects a slowdown in chip output, while Taiwan’s UMC
<2303.TW>, the world’s No.2 contract chip maker, forecast
weaker wafer shipments in the fourth quarter.

BNP Paribas manipulated stock trade-Japan watchdog

TOKYO, Oct 16 (Reuters) –

A BNP Paribas <BNPP.PA> unit submitted a report that
contained false information on a controversial financial deal
and one of its traders manipulated stock prices, and both should
face discipline, Japan’s securities watchdog said on Friday.

Elpida turns 1st operating profit in 8 qtrs

TOKYO, Oct 15 (Reuters) – Japan’s Elpida Memory Inc <6665.T>
said it earned its first operating profit in eight quarters on a
surge in chip prices and demand, underlining a semiconductor
sector recovery following a two-year slump.

Elpida, which secured a $2 billion lifeline in September
including public money, is hurrying to join industry leader
Samsung Electronics Co <005930.KS> in a new round of technology
spending to widen its lead over smaller Taiwanese makers of
dynamic random access memory (DRAM).

Japan’s DoCoMo to ease pace of Asia M&A

TOKYO (Reuters) – Japan’s top wireless operator NTT DoCoMo Inc <9437.T> is easing the pace of its M&A activity in Asia as it focuses on existing acquisitions, an executive said.

Cash-rich DoCoMo, which is still hungry to grow in Asia through investments in operators, wants to first solidify its services with India’s Tata Teleservices <TATASL.UL> and with Philippines Long Distance Telephone Co <TEL.PS>, senior executive vice president Kiyoyuki Tsujimura said on Thursday.

Murata orders stronger than expected

MAKUHARI, Chiba, Japan Oct 6 (Reuters) – Japanese electronic parts maker Murata Manufacturing Co Ltd <6981.T>, which counts Nokia <NOK1V.HE> and auto parts makers among its clients, said orders in the quarter just ended were stronger than expected.

Economic stimulus measures pushing sales of low-emissions cars worldwide and flat TV and cellphones in China boosted orders in July-September to 10 percent more than expected to near-last year’s pre-crisis level, its president said on Tuesday.
