Softbank dives on report rival may also sell iPhone 5

TOKYO (Reuters) – Shares of Softbank Corp (9984.T: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz), Japan’s third-largest mobile carrier, tumbled more than 10 percent on Thursday after a report said the company was set to lose its position as the sole vendor of Apple’s (AAPL.O: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz) iPhone in Japan.

The online version of the Nikkei Business magazine said rival carrier KDDI (9433.T: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz) would begin selling the iPhone 5 in Japan from around November.

Japan tells arms supplier to probe cyber attack

TOKYO (Reuters) – Japan told its biggest weapons supplier, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, to investigate a cyber attack on its computers on Tuesday, warning it may have breached contracts to supply billions of dollars of equipment by keeping quiet about the online assault.

Under the terms of an agreement the government imposes on all contractors, companies are obliged to inform it promptly of any breach of sensitive or classified information, a defense official said. Defense officials learnt of the August attack from local press reports Monday.

Mitsubishi Electric eyes overseas shift to fight yen rise

TOKYO (Reuters) – Mitsubishi Electric Corp will need to shift a great deal more production and procurement overseas if the yen continues to rise, the industrial conglomerate’s president said on Friday.

Mitsubishi Electric, which competes with Siemens, General Electric, Rockwell Automation and Schneider Electric, is already on course to move production offshore, where growth prospects are brighter.

Elpida may shift some output to Taiwan to combat yen

TOKYO, Sept 15 (Reuters) – Elpida Memory Inc ,
Japan’s biggest maker of dynamic random-access memory chips, is
considering shifting some production to Taiwan from Japan to
cope with an appreciating currency and survive in a dwindling
market.

The world’s No. 3 PC memory maker, behind Samsung
Electronics and Hynix Semiconductor , is
under pressure to boost its competitiveness in a market torn by
oversupply and depressed prices.

Suzuki seeks divorce from Volkswagen over Fiat spat

TOKYO/FRANKFURT (Reuters) – Suzuki Motor (7269.T: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz) is seeking to end its two-year old alliance with Volkswagen (VOWG_p.DE: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz) after the German carmaker accused it of violating their partnership pact.

Suzuki will ask Volkswagen to sell its 19.9 percent stake in the company, the Japanese company said in a statement to the Tokyo Stock Exchange on Monday. In return, Suzuki said it will offload its 1.5 percent stake in Volkswagen.

Sony, Toshiba, Hitachi to merge LCD operations

TOKYO (Reuters) – Japan’s Sony Corp, Toshiba Corp and Hitachi Ltd will merge their liquid-crystal display operations using $2.6 billion of government-backed funds to fend off growing competition from rivals in South Korea and Taiwan.

The merger will create the world’s largest maker of small panels used in smartphones and tablet PCs, leapfrogging global leaders Sharp Corp of Japan and Samsung Electronics of South Korea.
