The Internet is more than just a Web page, Yahoo Chief Executive Terry Semel said in a keynote address on Friday at the Consumer Electronics Show. “It is actually a delivery vehicle for communciations… The next itteration is about ease of use and open platforms and connecting the Intenet to any device you might imagine.”
Yahoo has over 400 million monthly users, he noted. The Internet media company’s recent push to encourage users to create more information, reviews, Web logs and other shared information could now extend to other devices, Semel and other Yahoo executives said.
“Today consumers are also becoming publishers, around well known content or content of their ow,” he said.
“For many many years, we grew up where somewhere else was the programmer. that dynamic has completely changed.”
Comedian Ellen DeGeneres faced a tough crowd in the early morning. “The whole thing about technology is that it should be getting easier. The only person I want to thank if they are here is the person who put the popcorn button on the microwave.”
Getting to the Yahoo event she got lost, DeGeneres said. She found herself in sex industry convention happening on the edges of the consumer electronics conference. “”Over here, I see the gadgets are a bit different. It’s about making things smaller,” she said.
While showing Yahoo’s products running on Intel chips, the demonstration computer stopped working. “I think it’s a Windows problem.” Intel Chief Executive Paul Ottelini quipped, poking fun at the expense of long-term partner Microsoft. “I would tend to agree,” Semel quickly added.
