Skip ad, pay fine?

Among the more intriguing concepts floating around the annual cable show, was this one from Craig Moffett (left), senior analyst at Sanford C. Bernstein: “If it were to be determined that the very notion of ad skipping amounts to theft, it would be incumbent on operators to do everything in their power to prevent ad skipping… Theres a court case waiting to happen.”

Program networks like Oxygen Networks were roiled this week after Cablevision Systems Corp. announced plans to provide TiVo-like functions directly from the cable system rather than living room based digital video recorders. The cable industry is monitoring Cablevision’s rollout closely.
