$499 for the PS3… OK with you?

SONY.jpgSony Corp. said it would begin selling its PlayStation 3 video game console in November for $499 in North America. The entry-level console will have a 20-gigabyte hard drive. (Controller pictured here/REUTERS)

Wedbush analyst Michael Pachter said that the price was competitive and the console’s motion-sensitive wireless controller would be reason enough for many gamers to wait for the PS3 rather than buy Microsoft’s Xbox 360, Reuters reported here.

I would not buy it. The price is too high. I will obsolete within a year the way

I think that $499 is far too much to pay for any gaming console. For that same ammount of money someone could buy an entire desktop computer, and probably do quite a bit more with it. Since I am not a fan of the Xbox 360 I will definatly get a PS3 but not until the price drops considerably.

- Posted by Peter

Let’s see: I could see a movie a week for a year for that price, even in New York City. I’m sticking with the multiplex.

- Posted by Patrick

That’s a hefty price, but with money saved over the course of four or five months, the price isn’t too audacious.

- Posted by Ghost

Let’s see.. I could get a $400 Xbox and then pay hundreds more for the online fees or get something that is a total package including HD movie player right out of the box?

This is a tough one, people.

- Posted by Lefein

They will probably get some early adopter idiots who will spend that much, but they’ll definitely have to either lower the price or come up with incentives or rebates to really penetrate the market.

- Posted by Renee

wow, thats out of control! and i just read that the box won’t even have HDMI outputs, which means you can’t watch blu-ray movies… i’m not paying for blu-ray if i can’t even use it to its full extent. HD-DVD will win the format war.

- Posted by downwithpeople

I will buy it a couple years after it’s release at more than half the original price. This is a lil too expensive for me. Ouch!

- Posted by Korgia

With a built-in Blu-ray DVD drive it is SO worth it!

- Posted by Mike

Sony seems to be relying on its brand name, but is the PlayStation brand name really worth a $200 premium over an Xbox 360?

You’ll be able to play Blu Ray discs with the lesser PS3, by the way, just not in high definition. Which, to my mind, defeats the purpose. Strange decision, as is the decision not to include the proprietary memory stick format.

I don’ care about the price of the console…
How much will each game cost?
And how fun will they be?
Pretty graphics do not make a good game by themselves..

- Posted by Pablo

So the analyst thinks the $499 price is competitive because the controller is wireless and motion sensitive? Well, the Furby sold like gangbusters with those same features…

- Posted by Tom

Because my kid has so many PS2 games, I said yesterday that Xbox 360 was off the table. Today, Sony brought Xbox back into play.

- Posted by m.gerstein

The premium package is $599, which has all the “good stuff”. As far as I can tell the $499 package isn’t worth it relative to the $599 package, especially since I don’t believe the “core” package would be upgradeable like the xbox 360 is. As a Blu-ray player I would get it, as a gaming console, that comes second. Online content by the way will work like Xbox Live, with some stuff free, and most other stuff on a pre-paid system. For about $4 a month, I very much enjoy my Xbox Live. Games will be about $59.99 and as for this motion stuff, I don’t see it catching on, for Nintendo it will since theirs can separate into 2 handheld controllers, as opposed to adding motion to a pre-existing controller, which is basically what happened. I’ll buy the ps3 just to watch Blu-Ray, if that even catches on. More like a backup to my xbox360.

- Posted by jt

I will definitely be purchasing the $599 version. Why? All the great features, 60 GB HDD, great GAMES, 1080p resolution games at 60 fps as well as a blue ray BD-R player… well worth it.

- Posted by Parakeet Head

I am assuming this has a pretty amazing graphics engine? To appreciate this visual output you’re not going to be wiring it up to a $250 TV, but one at at least twice that price. To really make it fun it’ll be hooked up to the 37″ plasma in the living room, at which point the console is only a small part of the electronics bill for the household.

- Posted by Nic Fulton

Motion-sensing controller. Wow. It’s not like Nintendo thought of that first. Cough**analoguesitck**CoughCough*rumblep ack**. Sony really is cheap and not as innovative as Nintendo. I will never buy one.

- Posted by Ash

Not for the price… Needs to be a little bit more competitive.

- Posted by Adam Koester

I will be buying several….

….and then immediately pawning them off to idiots for profit. :D

- Posted by Me

I can’t believe some of the things people are saying. You get a 2,000 dollar plus TV, then hook it up to an expensive 7.1 stereo system, then complain about a $600 one-stop media behemoth that makes it all worth it?

I guess some people would rather spend a hundred or two for that other system that doesnt even have HDMI as a choice for output and wired controllers? *cough*

- Posted by Lefein

I think it’s totally worth it. I mean, people gave $600 for the complete X-Box, and we all know that the price is going to drop. And of course, there are going to be those people who gripe about the price and be the first ones in like to reserve a copy. I’m waiting for a price break, but still buying.

- Posted by Jayden

Ok… if i’m not mistaken, the HD-DVD player that came out a month ago was around $1k… just a the freaking player… i think the manufacturer was samnsung… so… for 600 bucks you get the player, all sorts of multimedia things and a game system? THAT IS GREAT!!

- Posted by eva

The PS3 runns on Linux and some of the screen shots I have seen show the linux desktop it uses. Considering that if the PS3 can be used for things other than just gaming (web surfing, email, word processing, etc.) it will be worth well more than $499.

- Posted by Sean

You guys are poorlings… $499 is cheap. Apparently you don’t know about the cell processor and only the best video card ever made which is worth 500 alone, not to mention HD, and BLU-RAY… hey why don’t you look up BLU-RAY player on eBay and see how much it costs? K thanks.

- Posted by Jre

Remember when NES was $99? SNES $150? Then playstation was $200? Then PS2 was $299? Consoles will continue to to rise in price because of all the costs in designing and producing the best system possible. Sony is going to take a huge LOSS selling these consoles at this price with the hopes they’ll be able to recoup the costs in software sales in the future. If you want new technology, you’re going to pay for it. Same with cell phones, printers, computers, TVs EVERYTHING. If you don’t want to pay a premium, then stay one generation back. PS2 is is $99 dollars now. So is a pentium III with 16mb video.

- Posted by ed

Do I look like I’m an idiot?

- Posted by Tom

Xbox premium 400 + WIFI 100 + external hd-dvd 250 = 750

ps3 60 GB 599 includes more than the above.

No brainer

- Posted by John

Well it is a pretty high price especially when you look at the competition, for the parents out there that buy this for their kids great! But for us that have to work a couple weeks or months to save up for it, its just not worth it and besides who has $600+ cash sitting in their pocket just waiting to spend it, oh but wait americans don’t save we just CHARGE IT! TOO EXPENSIVE for the intended market to me.

- Posted by Sherm

At least I’m happy the controller is not that boomerang thing. Early adopters will cough up the dough. I bought the PS2 when it got re-designed and most of its best games were at $20, so I waited quite a bit.

- Posted by Anonymous

That amount of cash would buy my car a lot of gas! Well, maybe not that much actually, but I need the 200 gallons of gas worse than a gaming machine. Sorry Sony.

- Posted by Les

I THINK SONY THAT YOU ARE FRIGGIN CRAZY TO SELL THIS NEW DECK AT SUCH A FRIGGEN HIGH PRICE.HOW THE HELL DO YOU THINK THE AVARAGE KID COULD AFORD THAT I MEAN ALSO WHAT PARENT WOULD SPEND THAT KIND OF MONEY JUST FOR A FRIGGIN DECK.NOT COUNTING THE GAMES .I THINK YOUR UPPER MANAGMENT NEEDS TO FRIGGIN STOP AND THINK ITS NOT HOW MUCH YOU STING US ITS QANITY THAT WILL MAKE THE BIG BUCKS DUH.OH AND AS FOR AS SONY GOES YOU WILL NEVER TOUCH NINTENDO,SO GIVE IT UP.NINTENDO IS JUST PLAYING WITH YOU.THEY WILL SURRPASS 499.00KISS MY BUT!

- Posted by PATRICK

Although $600 is rather steep (very steep actually), I would have to say that I will buy it. Will I complain about the price, etc? Surely. $600 with tax, extra controller?, and just one game… expensive. But, yes, I will buy it. It seems as though it’s more of a necessity these days. Sad but true.

- Posted by JH

MY GOD SONY! I GUESS THE AVERAGE JOE HAS JUST BEEN TOLD TO GO TO HELL. OBVIOUSLY SONY DOESN’T WANT YOUR DOLLARS. HOW IN THE WORLD CAN THEY PUT SOMETHING OUT FOR THAT KIND OF MONEY? THINK OF ALL THE WORKING CLASS PARENTS AND KIDS OUT THERE THAT HAVE BEEN PUTTING MONEY IN YOUR POCKETS ALL THIS TIME. THIS AN OBSCENE PRICE AND I DEFINITELY WON’T BE PURCHASING THIS MACHINE FOR THAT PRICE. GOODBYE SONY, YOU LOST A LOYAL CUSTOMER.

- Posted by ed

How long between the release of the game system and the first story of someone being killed for their “new prize” by some gang banger who “just had to have one”?

- Posted by Crime Rate

I’m not buying it. I don’t really care what the price is, I’m not impressed with the system yet. All they’ve done is ramped up the system’s power so that more graphics can be packed in and (poorly) stolen Nintendo’s idea of a motion sensitive controller. Maybe when there are some good games for it and a major price drop, I’ll consider it. But the PS2 isn’t low enough for my liking yet.

- Posted by James

Patrick:
Please stop calling it a deck this doesn’t go in your car(normally), also turn off CAPS LOCK please.

Ed:
Turn off CAPS LOCK

Everyone Else:
Stop complaining, this system isn’t for a little kiddie. This is some serious gamer sh*t. $499 is a good price for what it offers, and $599 for premium package as well. K thanks.

- Posted by Jre

If Blu-Ray were a proven entity rather than the next potential beta/divx/etc I’d probably get one and say it was worth the price.

As it is, I want one but I’ll probably wait a year or so until they’re reasonable.

- Posted by Jerad

With the 60Gb drive on it, and some of the other features the implications is that this machine is “a hub” for digital content. I hope the engineers at Sony have thought this one through. Hubs have to stay on to be useful, and this might be in a sundrenched bedroom with no A/C (i.e. when little Leslie is at school)… Anyone at Sony reading this? Wanna comment?

- Posted by Nic Fulton

I heard a Sony spokesperson say a while back “Consumers will work more job hours to get enough money to buy our product (PS3).” I’ve forked out thousands of dollars on my gaming library for the PS2 and I’m happy. There doesn’t seem to be a promise for newer, innovative games for the PS3 or any of the new consoles. Look forward to prettier sequels everyone. Just like the movie industry, the gaming industry is relying on sequels to carry the market. This time, i’m sitting these consoles out. Good things come to those who wait. And at launch time, don’t expect me to be writting that check to Sony. The best thing to come out of all of this is cheaper prices for 2nd generation console games.

- Posted by Jerrod

A gaming console that costs over $500??? Games for it costing upwards of $60 each? You’ve got to be kidding me!

The only ones that can put a stop to this madness is the parents. Don’t buy this junk. Get your kids out from in front of the TV and buy them a $10 basketball. That will do more for them in life than any gaming console could ever do. Just my two cents.

- Posted by JQ

Heck no, I’ll stick with the old consoles. They are just as fun and 1/5 the price (or less). Does it take gasoline to make these systems?

- Posted by Tim

Sony > Microsoft

Nintendo Corp = Company that makes kiddie machines that never matches or outdoes in specs but sells due to it’s colorful childish appeal for kids, and it’s childish colorful games.

Reminds me of those pixar/disney/dreamworks 3D animation kid movies that they pump out everyweek and make hundreds of millions on each cause little kiddies beg their parents to go see each one, of course parents love their kids and want them to be quiet and spend some family time so they buy into this big scam that works and sells… It’s all hype… the xbox series seems to have alot of hype associated with it cause it’s fairly new in the scene. Read about all the problems it has and how many non-good titles offered for it. Sony has the crown with it’s playstation series and their titles and it’s been that way for 12 years. Also I

- Posted by Jre

No way will I buy one at that price, but I don’t buy brand new technology generally. I’ll wait for the price to come down, probably two or three years. By then all the games will be cheap anyway. Meanwhile, I can have fun playing all the PS2 games I haven’t bought yet that are coming down in price, or all the old PS1 games that I still enjoy (old game bad game).

On the other hand, I’m also not really into the HD craze, so I wouldn’t value the Blu-Ray player all that much. If the player is the main thing driving up the cost, maybe Sony could release a “poor man’s” version of the PS3, minus Blu-Ray?

- Posted by JDog

I stopped buying sony products after their rootkit virus was installed on my pc…. good luck.

- Posted by Rocky

Absolutely not. I just want a system to play games. I’ll buy one of those “kiddie” Nintendo Wii systems which has more innovation in its controller than Sony has had in 10 years on the PS. Nintendo remains the classy company that makes GREAT games, the only reason to buy a system. (oh wait, all these whippersnapper’s think a good game is defined by blood, gore, and sex… not FUN. Silly me).

- Posted by Tyk

Way too expensive.

- Posted by jjdet

Oh yeah. I probably wont buy it for a while. Remember all the bugs and problems the Xbox 360 had when it came out? It will be the same for the PS3. I’m gonna wait until those get ironed out.

- Posted by nick

No game console is worth that much, ESPECIALLY one from Sony. I’m never buying anything with “Sony” on it ever again, anyway. Not after the rootkit incident.

- Posted by Christopher Parker

A word of wisdom.

Unfortunately, if you’re a serious gamer, you’re bound to fork out the money for either the XBOX-360 or PS3. Both Microsoft and Sony market these to the younger audience hoping that their parents will give their hard-earned money to them. The question you must ask yourself now is when will the billionaires learn (or remember) who made them rich in the first place?

I will not buy either console until the price is $199 and you shouldn’t either! It’s time to remind the money hungry giants that we know what they’re up to and it’s time they stop. They war against each other at our expense! Not buying into their marketing tactics (on innocent children) will make them remember whats right and wrong! Even my child knows the difference!!!

- Posted by kevin

people dont need the newest console the second it comes out. i bought my ps2 after 1.5 years of it being relesed it was 50% of the price so stop winning about the price and keep playing the old stuff un till it drops … jeez

- Posted by zeke

$600 for a console? Nope. It’s a bargain for the price. Really, it is. A PC that could do this costs easily over a grand without the HD or BluRay player. But, I don’t want an 360 or ps3 until I see who wins this rehash of the betamax/vhs war. I don’t want another worthless investment.

As for Nintendo, call it a kiddie (heh… kiddii) system but while they will not come out the “leader” in the next gen space by any means, they will be the only company making a profit.

sidenote: play wario twisted or wario ds, then you might have a clue how insanely addictive the Wii version will be. Except it will be rather embarassing if there’s a minigame requiring repeated down-stabs at things like in some DS minigames. yep, a true WiiWii minigame indeed :-D

- Posted by blurry

No way i would spend half a grand to buy a system, then the games you have to buy.

It’s not worth 6 dollars an hour of a crap job for this.

- Posted by Jon

Not a chance. These are getting out of hand, and with the price of games and subscriptions, I would rather spend that money on a vacation to Florida.

- Posted by Brian

I could buy a lot of useful machine tools that would help me do more with my time, or spend the money on one dubiously useful machine that is bound to eat a great deal of my time.

- Posted by Kevin

game companies are insane for going over a $250-300 price point.

no, I will not buy one. my old consoles will work just fine until they come out with something truly innovative and different, like say, holographic gaming.
blu ray? ooooooOOooooh. that’s worth 400 bucks more.
slightly better picture?
ooOOOooo.
way to go sony. another overpriced piece of junk that will break in 2 years like everything else you’ve put on the market since the mid-90’s.
nice batarang by the way.

good luck with all that.

- Posted by ckmfd

Jre who says “Stop complaining, this system isnt for a little kiddie” if this is so then why is the main advertising seen on TV which is PLASTERED all over “kiddie” channels Nick Jr., Cartoon Network, Disney, need I go on? Why is it all targeted to the “kiddies”? I can guarantee you that there are going to be a lot of pissed of “kiddies” come Christmas time and there’s no PS3, cause I sure as hell ain’t gonna spend that kind of money on a stupid video game console. I don’t care what kind of crap it can do and neither does my son, he just wants the cool new games that are plastered all over TV, but he can’t have them cause they can’t be played on the PS2 and even if I were loaded, I still wouldn’t pay $500 or more for this crap!!! My son will grow up knowing that yes video games and consoles are cool and fun just as I did, but that they are not the most important thing in this world, at least not so important that we would run out and buy it. In fact we may just completely get rid of our Sony system and stick with a computer as I am tired of these gaming companies coming out with these new consoles that will play the old games and then slow off on making new games for the old system. I understand this is a business and they have to make money, I feel more money would be made in also supplying to the average person who can’t or won’t become victim to this game!!!! Good luck Sony. Another loyal Sony Customer lost to your greed!!!!

- Posted by madisgifts

For $500, I get a PS3 or an absolutely top-of-the-line graphics card (and some RAM) for my computer, which would then be able to run any of the games I wanted it to. Basically, its a choice between games involving typing (MMO gaming mainly) or quick, arcade-style gaming with some RPGs tossed in.

Don’t know what my choice will be. But I know what I need to choose between now *shrugs*

For a game console… 600 is ridiculous.
For a Blu-Ray player/media center… 600 is amazing.

Have you tried watching DVDs on your PS2? Are you really going to want to have that kind of experience with Blu-Ray? Presuming, of course, that Blu-Ray wins the format war(which, given prices… it probably won’t). Moreover, you know any media center capabilities are going to be tied to Sony’s proprietary formats. It won’t be quite as bad as the UMD debacle, but I suspect it may be close.

The Wii is going to be cheap and looks fun as hell. Call it a kiddie box if you want, but it looks fun as hell.

X360… I just don’t find myself compelled to get one. They’re nice, and all… but it just doesn’t feel like it’s worth the price for the quality of the games on it.

Mommy and Daddy will go to the store this holiday to buy little Jimmy a console. They’ll see the price tag on the PS3 and walk right on to the Wii or the 360.

- Posted by Brian

If Sony were smart, they would be giving the PS2 away at a substantial loss just to once-and-for-all wipe Nintendo and Microsoft out of the console market. It would be nice to see Nintendo finally go the way of Intellivision, and I’d like to see Microsoft as the Appletosh of the gaming arena.

Microsoft = PC
Apple = Pirated music
Sony = Console gaming

The choice is obvious.

madisgifts:
I am not aware of any television advertising for the Sony PlayStation 3 yet, however I don’t watch much Cable TV(I use BT). But does this mean you are sitting at home watching Nick Jr. and Disney all day? How old are you?

Everyone else:
Stop worshiping money. It is only money, you only live once, buy the console. If it is out of your budget don’t complain about it, Sony is not asking you to buy it. If you can’t afford a gaming console because you don’t make enough money or whatever then you should pick a different hobby. If you don’t want a different hobby(I wouldn’t) get your sh*t together and get a better job to enjoy yourself in life. Ya don’t have to complain about the price of something, GOSH!

- Posted by Jre

i have a 360 n its amazin without all the blue-ray n hd-dvd knobs n whistles n its a great affordable price. The PS3 on the other hand…the cheaper bundle jus isnt worth it no inbuilt wifi etc. n its not even upgradeable bad move sony… ur forcin people to buy the premium pack, i will not buy it BUT my bro is goin to wen its cheaper so i win either way lol as im gettin the Wii for crimbo as well.

by the way n e one fussing over blue-ray do you even no all the features of it and how great it runs…most likely not as it hasnt even bin released n if its n e thin like wen the ps3 specs wer first mentioned n how much they have changed for the worse now wen sony releases the blu ray discs they will prob not stand up to all the greatness they have been summed up to b…i rest my case

- Posted by BeSh

No way. First of all, I hate SONY and will never buy from SONY due to their racist advertisement of PSP. I already have an xbox360; im satisfied with Gears of War and ready for HALO 3. Ill probably buy a Wii instead.

- Posted by Tom

sony realy are beaten by nintendo you guys s..k even an ancient game consiole can beat you guys.!!!!!!!!!!!!!
