Putting the “L” back in SL

Showtime’s lesbian drama “The L Word” is the latest to set up shop in the virtual world Second Life, joining the corporate land grab including this news organization, IBM and Sears. More TV show-themed neighborhoods are expected to find a home in SL, as residents call it. We saw early mock-ups of at least one other CBS-owned property, Star Trek, at the Consumer Electronics Show a few weeks ago.

The “L Word” SL presence recreates hotspots on the show, like local hangout The Planet (see above). Showtime.com goes a step further and provides video clip tutorials for those of us stuck in the firstlife.

The show has proven to be lucrative ground for offshoots. Its project in Second Life is actually the second virtual community based on the show. “L Word” actor Jennifer Beals is the founding partner and “L Word” creator Ilene Chaiken is CEO of  OurCharts.com, a lesbian social network.
