HDNet chief Mark Cuban has a new take on how content owners can address fears of being pirated by viewers uploading clips onto YouTube without their permission.
“Just overwhelm them,” he writes on his blog.
He got the idea while debating the fallout from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences’ demand that YouTube take down its clips from Oscars night.
“The question is: Do the Oscars benefit or are they harmed by their video being seen on Youtube.com rather than Oscars.com?” he asks, pointing out that Oscars.com actually did not host its own videos.
Here’s the plan: media companies and groups like the Academy should upload video clips that point viewers back to their sites not once, but 100 times on YouTube to drive YouTube users nuts. If they really want to watch the video, they’ll go back to your site. Mission accomplished.
“The reality is that Youtube viewers will grow tired of scanning through every video and just click over to Oscars.com where they will see all the unique video that isn’t anywhere on Youtube along with the Oscars.com paying advertisers.”
