Blockbuster chief: No time for DVDs

Blockbuster Chief Executive Jim Keyes is a busy man.

With all that work convincing shareholders not to dump their stock, Keyes barely has time to enjoy the very products he peddles — DVDs.

Here’s what he said at the Reuters Media Summit on Tuesday:

Traditionally, I’m an extremely busy person as you can imagine. It’s a rare privilege to sit home with my family and watch a DVD. I do do it. But it is a rare treat to have the time to do that. So, I was always behind on movies. Catching up, maybe airplanes when I was on an international flight. That was about the only time I was catching up on movies.

Some of his customers probably feel the same way, right?

Keyes answered with his Blackberry, which he whipped to show us a clip from “Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End” — downloaded from Movielink

Today, I’m finding myself increasingly watching movies by watching them when I can in bite-sized pieces on my Blackberry. I bet you didn’t know you can do that.

Now, Keyes got some help from the chairman of Blackberry maker Research in Motion and one of his IT guys. Turning that into a viable business is another matter.

More from Keyes on the business opportunity: The challenge is how do I make this convenient for everybody. This is a wonderful way to increase consumption of content. I’m finding now that I’m watching significantly more content than I ever did before because I can.
