Imus, the same but different

December 3, 2007

Don ImusVeteran radio personality Don Imus came roaring back on the airwaves on Monday, vowing that his new “Imus in the Morning” show will be just like the old one — except when it’s not.Imus returned after nearly eight months off the air. CBS fired him in April and dropped his show after he referred to members of the Rutger’s women’s basketball team as “nappy headed hos,” leading to charges of racism against the veteran radio broadcaster. Now he’s back on 77WABC Radio, with the first show broadcast from New York’s Town Hall venue on 43rd St., just off Times Square (with musical accompaniment by Levon Helm, former drummer and singer for The Band). Here’s what he said:We now have the opportunity to have a better program, to obviously diversify the cast… but the program is not going to change. But wait! Maybe there will be slight changes:So I will never say anything in my lifetime that will make any of those young women regret or feel foolish that they accepted my apology or forgave me. And no one else will say anything on my program that will make them feel I didn’t deserve a second chance.Could it be the debut of Imus lite?
