Playing with Meebo on Facebook

zombie.jpgInstant messaging site Meebo is building live chat rooms inside Facebook applications like BuddyMedia, (fluff)Friends, RockYou and Slide. Basically, when you’re deep into your Facebook zombie, you can talk to other FB folks about, er, their nice and pointy fangs.

For example, developer RockYou launched 12 Meebo rooms for each sign of the zodiac in its horoscopes application, adding an element of live interaction not covered by the social network’s own asynchronous messaging.

Apparently such chat rooms are a big growth driver for Meebo, which said today that its 6.5 million unique monthly user base is really much wider when you consider the 16.5 million users who visited Meebo widgets distributed across the Web in November.

Early next year, Meebo will start selling advertising in that chat room space and will share revenue with developers once traffic to the rooms reaches an agreed-upon benchmark.

As we grow, we will start creating buckets of people according to age, gender and these kinds of consumer targets, Meebo VP of business Martin Green told us.

The thought is over time we’ll build a fairly large network and start creating pools of interest … and introduce targeted brands. We’ll start as a MySpace would with kind of larger buckets, and the bigger we get, I’m sure the data we have today will change and evolve probably every month.

Those are some really large fangs.
