Vulcan Ventures, a company controlled by Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen, disclosed last week he plans to bid on U.S. wireless spectrum, joining a list of bidders including Google, AT&T, Qualcomm, Verizon, EchoStar and Vodafone.
Just what he plans to do with it is anyone’s best guess. The Wall Street Journal had a couple of ideas that ranged from keeping it for Allen’s other company, cable operator Charter Communications, selling it at a later date, or using the airwaves for video broadcasting.
Moreover, by keeping it under Vulcan’s ownership rather than the publicly-traded Charter, Allen can shield its plans from the public eye.
