CES: Yahoo’s old/new vision

January 7, 2008

sany0034.JPGYahoo co-founder and Chief Jerry Yang took the stage at the annual Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas and aiming to sketch out a vision for how the struggling giant aims to remain relevant.

“I am sorry to disappoint you. It’s still the same old face … but probably with a little different attitude,” he said referring to becoming the CEO of Yahoo last June amid a management shakeup.

Within the first five minutes, Yang dips into unintended irony. Speaking about the past, Yang says of the company’s genesis way back when, “Our goal then was to be your starting point.”

Yang on the company’s goal now: “ Our goal is to help you make the most of your busy life.  (To be the) best starting point for your entire Web experience.”

Underscoring his point: “The more things change, more they stay the same.”

Investors are pining for great change, not the status quo.
