CES: No wait for taxi

If this scene outside the Las Vegas airport on Tuesday afternoon is anything to go by, then it looks like this year’s Consumer Electronics Show really will be a quiet one.

In years past, people arriving the day before the gadget fest’s press day had to line up for at least a half hour — and often much longer — to get a cab into the city.

But today, we breezed through the neatly arranged ropes of the taxi stand, which in previous years had contained crowds of impatient conventioneers. There was hardly a wait as the row of vacant cabs seemed to far outnumber the passengers arriving.

To be sure, this is a weekday, not a weekend — as our taxi driver Victor was quick to point out. While the economic recession has taken a toll on conventions in the city as companies cut back on travel expenses, Victor says weekend traffic hasn’t changed dramatically as pleasure seekers continue to come to Sin City.
