If you leave it playing video all night long, viewing a dynamically updating website, or any other feature that requires constant internet access or other processor activity it'll drain your battery too. It's inconvenient, but is not a flaw in the programming. The phone doesn't know if you're sitting at your desk or asleep in bed: Plug it in or log out.
