Now even music labels are making their own games
Modern record labels are keen to be seen as more than just outfits that sell CDs and MP3s of their artists’ works. These days they want a bigger share of the ancillary rights, ranging from from ringtones to t-shirts.
But Universal Music Group, the world’s largest music company, is going one step further, moving beyond simply licensing out rights to third parties. It has set up a team to create and develop its own music-related products.
The first of these new products will be its own iPhone app game called Six String — a game that allows fans to “authentically recreate the guitar playing experience using tracks gathered from the real studio masters.”
Six String comes with 6 air guitar favorites for $5, including Bon Jovi’s “You Give Love A Bad Name” and Tom Petty’s “Runnin’ Down A Dream.” Fans can also purchase 20 additional songs to play along with at 99 cents a song.
It’s worth noting Universal Music’s parent, French media giant Vivendi, also owns video game maker Activision Blizzard — home of the Guitar Hero franchise.
So is there a conflict between the sister companies? No, says a source close to Universal. “You’ve got to be everywhere to win these days and clearly there’s a great demand for music games.”
Let’s hope there’s enough demand to go round.
