I know people who were financially irresponsible in the manner described by the writer of this report and the minions of others he refers to. Now in their 60's they not only cannot retire, but cannot afford their mortgage payments. Some of them would have had $100,000 or more to get through this recession... but spent it all on bigger, better electronic gadgetry.

Of course you have no regrets now! Like them, if bad fortune visits your retirement, will you come running to those like me asking if my extra bedroom is available? I won't have the heart to tell you to get lost, "old friend," and pay for your years of irresponsible spending (with no regrets).

Rather, I will tell you "sorry, I already rented the room out of (name of young family member going to college) but I know the local YMCA is renting out rooms until you get back on your feet!!" And no, I won't laugh when I hang up the phone, too old for that. No, I'll pray for you and hope somehow, against all hope, you make it through your retirement years... on your own.
