Whatever happens, today is a sad day for investigative journalism. Not all journalists at the NOTW were bad apples, just like not all MPs were not expense fiddlers and not all bankers were fat cats. The galvanisation of public anger about the issue has been remarkable but not completely surprising. So many issues encapsulated in one incident : Boundary violation; Disrespect of the dead; Interfering in a police investigation; Sensationalism to sell papers; Power plays; Favouritism; The Jewish control angle; Concentration of media ownership and political intrigue. When the zeitgeist of a nation reaches a certain point it doesn't take much of a spark to set off a wildfire. To be fair to the Murdochs the closure of the paper was decided pretty quickly. A mortal wound had been inflicted. There was no point trying to flog a dead horse anymore. The world needs good media outlets not one’s like NOTW. Regarding journalism... “I hate newspapermen. They come into camp and pick up their camp rumours and print them as facts. I regard them as spies, which, in truth, they are.
