Anti-G8 protests aim for Canary Wharf banking district

LONDON (Reuters) – Activists plan a show of “civil disobedience” in the heart of London’s Canary Wharf financial district on Friday to protest against capitalism ahead of next week’s G8 summit which Britain is hosting.

Environmentalists, poverty campaigners and opponents of the British government’s austerity measures will join under the banner “They Owe Us” in a demonstration at Canary Wharf, home to major banks such as Barclays and JP Morgan, as well as other financial powerhouses.

‘Desperate father’ spray paints British queen’s portrait

LONDON (Reuters) – A man defaced a portrait of Britain’s Queen Elizabeth with paint at London’s Westminster Abbey on Thursday, with a campaign group for fathers’ rights saying he was one of its members making a “desperate” plea to the monarch for help.

The painting of the 87-year-old monarch, “The Coronation Theatre: Portrait of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II” by London-based artist Ralph Heimans, had been part of a display marking the 60 years since the queen’s coronation in 1953.

Riot police move in on anti-G8 UK protesters

LONDON (Reuters) – Police in riot gear moved in on a central London building where activists had planned an anti-G8 protest through the British capital on Tuesday before next week’s summit of world leaders.

The demonstrators had said they would stage a “Carnival Against Capitalism” across London to kick off a week of action before Britain hosts the meeting of the Group of Eight leading industrialized nations at a golf resort in Northern Ireland.

Firms warn British staff of protests before G8 summit

LONDON, June 11 (Reuters) – Some of the world’s biggest
hedge funds, private equity firms and banks have warned their
staff in London to take precautions in the event of disruption
during a protest on Tuesday planned by anti-capitalist activists
ahead of the G8 summit.

The demonstrators say they will stage a “Carnival Against
Capitalism” across the British capital to kick off a week of
direct action before Britain hosts a summit of leaders from the
Group of Eight leading industrialised nations next week at a
golf resort in Northern Ireland.

Long jail terms for men plotting to bomb EDL rally

LONDON (Reuters) – Six men who plotted to attack a rally by the anti-Islamist English Defence League (EDL) using guns, knives and a homemade nail bomb were given lengthy jail terms of almost 20 years each on Monday.

The men, who admitted terrorism offences in April, had planned to attack the right-wing group’s march though Dewsbury in northern England in June last year. But by the time they arrived, the 450 EDL demonstrators had dispersed.

LONDON (Reuters) – Britain’s Prince Philip was taken to a London hospital on Thursday for a planned operation on his abdomen, Buckingham Palace said, in the latest round of medical treatment for Queen Elizabeth’s 91-year-old husband.

The British monarch’s consort of more than 65 years, who turns 92 on Monday, is expected to spend two weeks at the London Clinic after undergoing “an exploratory operation following abdominal investigations”, the palace said in a statement.
