‘Desperate father’ spray paints the Queen’s portrait

LONDON (Reuters) – A man defaced a portrait of the Queen with paint at London’s Westminster Abbey on Thursday, with a campaign group for fathers’ rights saying he was one of its members making a “desperate” plea to the monarch for help.

The painting of the 87-year-old monarch, “The Coronation Theatre: Portrait of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II” by London-based artist Ralph Heimans, had been part of a display marking the 60 years since the queen’s coronation in 1953.

Riot police move in on anti-G8 UK protesters

LONDON (Reuters) – Police in riot gear moved in on a central London building where activists had planned an anti-G8 protest through the British capital on Tuesday before next week’s summit of world leaders.

The demonstrators had said they would stage a “Carnival Against Capitalism” across London to kick off a week of action before Britain hosts the meeting of the Group of Eight leading industrialized nations at a golf resort in Northern Ireland.

Firms warn British staff of protests before G8 summit

LONDON, June 11 (Reuters) – Some of the world’s biggest
hedge funds, private equity firms and banks have warned their
staff in London to take precautions in the event of disruption
during a protest on Tuesday planned by anti-capitalist activists
ahead of the G8 summit.

The demonstrators say they will stage a “Carnival Against
Capitalism” across the British capital to kick off a week of
direct action before Britain hosts a summit of leaders from the
Group of Eight leading industrialised nations next week at a
golf resort in Northern Ireland.

Long jail terms for men plotting to bomb EDL rally

LONDON (Reuters) – Six men who plotted to attack a rally by the anti-Islamist English Defence League (EDL) using guns, knives and a homemade nail bomb were given lengthy jail terms of almost 20 years each on Monday.

The men, who admitted terrorism offences in April, had planned to attack the right-wing group’s march though Dewsbury in northern England in June last year. But by the time they arrived, the 450 EDL demonstrators had dispersed.

UK queen’s husband, 91, in hospital for operation

LONDON (Reuters) – Britain’s Prince Philip was taken to a London hospital on Thursday for a planned operation on his abdomen, Buckingham Palace said, in the latest round of medical treatment for Queen Elizabeth’s 91-year-old husband.

The British monarch’s consort of more than 65 years, who turns 92 on Monday, is expected to spend two weeks at the London Clinic after undergoing “an exploratory operation following abdominal investigations”, the palace said in a statement.

UK coroner calls for public inquiry into Litvinenko murder

LONDON (Reuters) – The coroner tasked with overseeing an inquest into the murder of former Russian spy Alexander Litvinenko called for the British government to hold a public inquiry into the death after he concluded evidence would be kept secret from his own hearing.

Litvinenko, 43, died after drinking polonium-210, a radioactive isotope, that had been slipped into his tea at a London hotel in 2006. In a deathbed statement, he accused Russian President Vladimir Putin of ordering his murder, a claim Russia has denied.

British police ponder conspiracy after soldier murder

LONDON (Reuters) – Police investigating the murder of a soldier hacked to death on a busy London street were looking on Friday into whether the two suspected killers, British men of Nigerian descent, were part of a wider conspiracy.

The two suspects, aged 22 and 28, are under guard in hospitals after being shot and arrested by police following the murder of 25-year-old Afghan war veteran Lee Rigby on Wednesday in broad daylight. They have not yet been charged.
