Petrol retailers say UK govt making crisis of fuel trucker strike
LONDON, March 28 (Reuters) – The British government urged
the public to fill up with petrol on Wednesday ahead of an
impending strike by tanker drivers that could see stocks run
dry, but was branded irresponsible by petrol retailers who said
the government was creating a crisis.
The government, which put the army on standby on Tuesday to
help if truckers go ahead with action, told Britons to take
“sensible steps”.
Army on standby for fuel truckers strike
LONDON (Reuters) – The government laid plans on Tuesday to cope with possible fuel shortages if a strike by tanker drivers goes ahead, lining up the army to help and warning businesses and the public to make preparations.
Truckers voted on Monday to take strike action that union officials said could deplete petrol stocks within two days, against a backdrop of tough austerity measures to tackle a record peacetime public budget gap.

Angry British police to seek right to strike
LONDON (Reuters) – British police officers angry with the coalition government’s plans to cut jobs and freeze pay will vote on whether they want the right to strike, the body representing them said on Thursday.
The Police Federation, which represents 135,000 ordinary “bobbies” and low ranking officers in England and Wales, said the move to seek full industrial rights showed its members were infuriated by the government’s austerity drive.

“Lone wolf” gunmen are security puzzle for West
LONDON, March 21 (Reuters) – The possibility that a killing
rampage by a French gunman was a solo campaign will inject fresh
urgency into Western efforts to detect “self-starter” or “lone
wolf” terrorists before they strike.
The tactic Al Qaeda calls “individual jihad” — low-tech
attacks by untrained sympathisers acting largely or completely
on their own — may seem a sign of weakness in an organisation
that mounted the team-based raids of Sept 11, 2001.
Magna Carta to get modern makeover for 800th birthday
LONDON (Reuters) – The Magna Carta, the English medieval document considered a cornerstone of modern democracy, is to get an overhaul and be brought back into the public spotlight in time for its 800th anniversary, academics said on Thursday.
A three-year research project will also attempt to discover whether King John, the monarch who signed the document in 1215, really was the villainous monster made popular by portrayals in the Robin Hood legend.
Government could privatise some roads
LONDON (Reuters) – The government could lease chunks of its road network to the private sector as Prime Minister David Cameron seeks to improve the country’s infrastructure to stop it falling further behind its competitors.
The move to seek help from sovereign wealth funds and private investors came after news Cameron had only managed to secure two billion pounds from pension funds for new projects by 2013 – far short of a 20 billion pound target.
