The business will simply be handled by someone earning minimum wage and selling lottery tickets and beer as their main occupation. Of the 3650 rural post offices threatened, how many are in a community where a suitable business base exists? The population density of Loving County, TX is less than 2 per square mile. I doubt there is a critical mass there.

Your plan is almost certainly not the be-all, end-all solution to USPS’s problems, but I think it would be a big help. Even if it did nothing, though, it still would be infinitely better than ending Saturday delivery or lowering the standards of delivery speed. Because, you know, it wouldn’t be killing off the last shreds of competitiveness USPS has going for it.
