Two first class tickets to hell, please…

ukraine-180.jpgYou know, I like top ten lists as much as anybody else, but I have to wonder who thought this one was useful. We have this story on somebody’s list of the top ten “Hell on Earth” spots.

You could knock me over with a feather, but it turns out you should avoid Papua New Guinea. It seems they have lots of disease, and wild gangs that use machine guns in bank robberies. Another bad place is Chernobyl, Ukraine, unless you  enjoy radiation much more than most people do.

Also make a note to bypass Yakutsk, Russia, even if it means an inconvenient detour. Temperatures often drop below -58 degrees Fahrenheit there.

But wait, there are more surprises! Another hell on Earth is a place called Baghdad, in Iraq! “Uh-oh, Sweetie! Is it too late to get our deposit back on that package deal to Iraq, Somalia, Burundi and Oklahoma?”

It’s nice that the machinegun weilding bankrobbers of the United States are from domesticated gangs.

If only Chernobyl’s 40 pound artichokes weren’t radioactive and poisoned with heavy metals, the world’s food problems might become a thing of the past.

Wasn’t the Arctic desolate enough or did they only consider settled and previously settled areas?

…and then there’s also Holbrook, Arizona, where a sausage biscuit is $5 and drunk vagrants beat on your car windows as you drive through to pick up a bucket of chicken…

I had to say something about the utterly inappropriate and distracting advertisement placement within the same window of the “top 10 hells” slideshow. It is a video ad from Epson. It is impossible to turn it off. When you pause it, it starts all over again when you proceed to the next photo! So, you get annoyed not once but ten times all over again! This happening right next to a coverage of a grim subject matter only makes things worse. Having 15 years of media planning experience, I am well aware of your need to generate income through advertising, however, I also know that this shouldn’t get to the point of distracting and annoying your audience/readers so that the advertising actually starts working against the company (both Reuters and Epson in this case). How on earth any media planner or advertiser can hope to gain business by this placement?

Holbrook, Arizona eh? Were the drunks Rosie O’Donnell, Richard Simmons, fat Elvis and Oprah, the Clintons, Nick Nolte, Screech and Adam Sandler by any chance? ‘You will know them by their deeds and by their Mister Deeds’, is the way I remember it.
