Oddly Enough Blog

News, but not the serious kind

Why are you so happy? I mean disgusted?

May 8, 2009

Blog Guy, what’s t he stupidest thing you’ve seen all year?

Saya, the humanoid robot teacher who supposedly makes facial expressions.

What’s so stupid about her?

They’re the worst expressions I’ve ever seen. I mean, who are we kidding?

These photos show Saya showing happiness, surprise, anger, disgust and fear, plus a shot of actress Martha Plimpton so I have an even number of headshots. Can you tell which expression is which?

The second one down on the left is Plimpton, I think.

That one isn’t part of the test.

Um, top right is happiness, I know that. Bottom right is anger, for sure.

Wrong and wrong. My point is, this will teach a whole generation of kids totally incorrect facial cues. When they enterĀ a room, they won’t know a surprise party from an execution. I guess that’s good news for grifters and incompetent mimes, but for everyone else… You understand?

Sure. You’re saying Martha Plimpton is a robot?

Comedienne Joan Rivers is capable of displaying all the above emotions (except the Plimpton, which I’m not sure even is an emotion).

both fear and disgust could be mistaken for constipation. and anger and surprise could be the aftermath of that constipation.

Mr Bob,

Didn’t Plimpton play football for a couple plays and thought that he/she was the King of the World? Or was that Top of the World?

Or was that a combo of White Heat and Scarface, with Plimpton dying atop something while shooting at people?

See, Mr Bob? I is smart! You can’t fool me!

Maybe Jon Gosselin can have an affair with Saya…

I don’t know…does she look a bit battered and bruised, or is it just me? She doesn’t look well at all. I mean I know they’re trying to create dimensions in her face, but she just looks like she had a really bad night out or something.

She’s obviously been trying to get in touch with her emotions without, it would seem, too much success….

It does look like Michael Jackson (who makes facial expressions with motors inside his face).
