How about a Christmas punch?

January 4, 2010

Blog Guy, I’m like you. I have a hard time letting go of the holiday spirit. Can you help bring me back down to earth?

peru fights women 240I sure can, friend. Check out our video clip of this Christmas Day celebration in Peru, where men, women and children face-off in bare-knuckle brawls as part of a tradition to clear personal grievances.

Gosh, I just don’t see beating the holy snot out of each other as a true embodiment of holiday magic. How does that fit in with “A Christmas Carol,” for example?

Easy. The lesson is, if you’re going to piss off somebody during the year, make sure it’s someone you can take, like old Ebeneezer Scrooge. Or better yet, Tiny Tim.

peru fights men 240Hmm. I’m not so sure. What do the local people say about this tradition.

One local guy said it is “a custom of my people that I am never going to forget. For the rest of my life, I am going to have this custom, the fighting, the bullfighting, the cockfighting.”

Cripes! So for that guy the best traditions are the ones that involve pain and cruelty and death? Hey wait! THANKS, Blog Guy! It worked!  Now I no longer have the holiday spirit at all!

I figured. God bless us, every one!

Blog Guy,

I was at my brother’s house over the holidays and he had a book lying around titled ’50 Relatives Worse Than Yours’. Do you think he was trying to tell me something? Next year I’m thinking we should celebrate the holidays in Peru.
