News, but not the serious kind

Honeydew you need a new phone?

July 18, 2011

Blog Guy, I guess cellphones are pretty much a universal sight now. I mean it’s the same thing in every part of the world, isn’t it?

Not everywhere. Over in Jordan, for instance, people still make their calls on huge melons.

What? You mean like watermelons? I find that very hard to believe.

It’s true. In the top photo you can see a couple of tech-savvy Jordanian gents with their Smart Melons pressed against their ears, much as we do with our Smart Phones.

Wait a second, this is just too stupid. Where do they buy these Smart Melons?

At the Apple Store, of course.

The Apple Store sells Melons? Look here, Blog Guy, isn’t putting Smart Phone technology into large pieces of fruit kind of a backward way to do things?

Maybe, but it’s a lot better than the old-school Flip Melon this guy here on the right is using.

BG: I think you misread the second picture, that’s not a flip-phone, it’s an open SD Card slot. The SmartMelons have expandable capacity too you know! You can get a 16 Gigaseeds version or upgrade to the 32 Gigaseed one.

It’s a question of just how much juice you want to squeeze out of your phone see.

Are we sure that those are melons and not tumors from cellphone overuse?

Nosmo, so you mean like a melonoma? Spin, brilliant…

As a matter of fact, my phone has run out of juice..
but there is no way i am topping up the melon!

Apparently the old TV series ‘Get Smart’ is still popular in Jordan, with local folk often deploying the ‘melon of silence’ to thwart other people listening in – as demonstrated in the first picture.

@Spin: I’m guessing Mr. Spam Filter would have stopped that melon comment in its tracks if it had come from a guy.

Since Mr. B. is most likely right about Mr. Spam Filter I will avoid a comment about the Harvard grad and her Smart Melons, instead opting for the safe “Gallagher must work for the competing phone company then” comment.

I can’t stand any more puns…
…but then again, to quote Edgar Allen Poe, “The goodness of a true pun is the direct ratio of its intolerability.”

By that measure, you guys are doing REALLY good! I’m seriously lovin’ it….

uh, Spin…I’m pretty sure if you have the melons, you get plenty of phone calls ;)

Moonshine, are you quoting a serious author?
I am gonna be kind today and let that pass.. simply coz I am loving these puns too :D

@GeorgiaPeach: You said it! :D

Speaking of ‘melons’, I was recently impressed by a pair I saw. In ‘smartphone’ terms, these would be the iPads for sure.

Shra, Thanks for the pass…. I knew I was taking a chance. But although E.A. Poe is usually serious, the quote was just too good to let the opportunity to slide.

@Malteser: iPad is not a smart phone, but a tablet/handheld computer.

Yikes

*gets ready to be zapped* :)

Now see, just when I am in a benevolent mood, up comes someone who is just asking for it!
Zapppppppppppp, fwd!

Posted by Shra | Report as abusive

Haha fwd… you HAD to correct it, ey!?

Posted by Malteser | Report as abusive

See what happens when you try to be nice, Shra?

Posted by rcbasler | Report as abusive

I know BG.. and thats why I cant be nice.
I am forever cursed, to be the Ice-Cold Zapper..

Occupational hazard, I would say..
