Courage on the Island of Widows

We got up before dawn to travel to the Island of Guanacastal, a community 130 km (80 miles) north of Managua, Nicaragua. My travel companions were silent, some lost in their thoughts and others sleeping, shivering due to the cold of the early morning hours.

As we passed Chichigalpa, a small and peaceful town near the San Cristobal volcano and where the famous Nicaraguan rum Flor de Cana is made, we started seeing the immense sugar cane plantations, the main component in the production of sugar and rum.

      "Oswaldo was born in Managua, and began his photo career almost accidentally after finishing his military service with the Sandinista government during the civil war. His first civilian job was as supply chief for the photo department of the Sandinista state news agency ANN, which employed only expatriate photographers. When ANN's director decided to replace all the photographers for Nicaraguans, Oswaldo found an opening. He worked for ANN covering the final two years of the war, went on to become chief of photographers at the La Tribuna newspaper, and joined Reuters in 1997.
