ROME (Reuters) – With the French Open looming in his horizon, Fernando Verdasco is tapping into Andre Agassi’s wealth of knowledge as he tries to join the grand slam winners’ club.

The ninth-ranked Spaniard, in good form until losing to compatriot David Ferrer in Saturday’s Rome Masters semi-final, is taking advice from former Roland Garros champion Agassi on how to dodge some of the pitfalls the retired great ran into during his colourful career.

Nadal overcomes Swiss test, leads Spanish charge

ROME (Reuters) – Rafael Nadal showed his ruthless streak to overcome an early test from Swiss Stanislas Wawrinka in a 6-4 6-1 win on Friday and complete three-quarters of a possible all-Spanish last four at the Rome Masters.

Fernando Verdasco beat world number two Novak Djokovic for the second time in two weeks when he clinched an enthralling tussle 7-6 3-6 6-4 to set up a semi-final against compatriot David Ferrer.

Djokovic succumbs to Verdasco again

ROME (Reuters) – World number two Novak Djokovic succumbed to Fernando Verdasco for the second time in two weeks on Friday when he lost an enthralling Rome Masters quarter-final 7-6 3-6 6-4.

Djokovic was thrashed by in-form sixth seed Verdasco in the semi-finals of the Monte Carlo Masters in their last meeting and the match looked like it might follow a similar plot early on.

Nadal wins, Murray loses in Rome

ROME (Reuters) – Holder Rafael Nadal provided more evidence that he is regaining his old dominance on clay after an injury-hit 2009 by cruising past Romanian Victor Hanescu 6-3 6-2 at the Rome Masters on Thursday.

British world number five Andy Murray struggled, however, and lost 6-3 6-4 to Nadal’s Spanish compatriot David Ferrer.

Well-beaten Murray sees progress

ROME (Reuters) – Andy Murray gave an indication of how far off his best he has fallen on Thursday, when he said he could see progress in his game despite being comprehensively beaten by Spain’s David Ferrer at the Rome Masters.

The Briton, who has slipped to fifth in the world rankings after reaching number two last year, struggled in several areas during the 6-3 6-4 third-round defeat, with his serve malfunctioning badly.
