<p>Now I know where United Nations negotiators should be trained: in the fashion world!</p>
<p><a href="http://blogs.reuters.com/photographers-blog/files/2013/01/mdf1449649.jpg"><img src="http://blogs.reuters.com/photographers-blog/files/2013/01/mdf1449649.jpg" alt="" title="French top model Marine Deleeuw (L) waits for a casting at Lebanese designer Zuhair Murad&#039;s headquarter in Paris, January 23, 2013. Now, ahead of the four-week marathon of shows, she is aware that in modelling your body is your instrument and plans to &quot;rest the most I can, take vitamins, and do everything possible to not fall ill&quot;. <p>If you want to cover a “not usual” story in the world of fashion, you have to learn what negotiation means. If you want to take pictures backstage at a fashion show, you have to be ready to send 120 emails and call the recipients to explain what you meant in your messages and hear &#8220;I am afraid this will not be possible”. But, once those people are convinced &#8211; they might change their mind the very next minute &#8211; but if they don’t, you enter the fashion and model&#8217;s world and realize, it was worth it. I didn&#8217;t know if I would be able to photograph this story untill the last minute. Once I finally got the accreditation for the Valentino show, the model had to be rushed to the dental emergency and was not guaranteed to work that day. But suddenly the clouds opened and I started seeing the sunlight of the fashion world. </p>
<p><a href="http://www.reuters.com/news/pictures/slideshow?articleId=USRTR3D47N">GALLERY: A DAY WITH A MODEL</a></p>
<p>My goal was to show the part of the fashion week we usually don&#8217;t see &#8211; a model&#8217;s life backstage.</p>
<p><a href="http://blogs.reuters.com/photographers-blog/files/2013/01/mdf1449577600.jpg"><img src="http://blogs.reuters.com/photographers-blog/files/2013/01/mdf1449577600.jpg" alt="" title="French top model Marine Deleeuw speaks with her booker at her model agency before going to Valentino Haute Couture Spring-Summer 2013 fashion show in Paris January 23, 2013. REUTERS/Philippe Wojazer " width="600" height="388" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-36380" /></a></p>
<p>I first met French top model Marine Deleeuw at the Elite agency flat where the agency gathers the models during fashion week. The young French woman, Marine Deleeuw, opened the door with a large smile, happy to welcome us (Elite press attachee and myself) into her world. I started taking pictures as soon as I entered amid beautiful early morning light. One thing I learned during the Haute Couture shows was that the models have to be at the show a minimum of 3 hours before (for the renowned houses sometimes 6 hours) so there was no time to spare. </p>
<p><a href="http://blogs.reuters.com/photographers-blog/files/2013/01/mdf1449583.jpg"><img src="http://blogs.reuters.com/photographers-blog/files/2013/01/mdf1449583.jpg" alt="" title="French top model Marine Deleeuw (C) waits for the start of the show in the backstage before the start of Lebanese designer Zuhair Murad&#039;s Haute Couture Spring-Summer 2013 fashion collection in Paris, January 24, 2013. REUTERS/Philippe Wojazer " width="600" height="400" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-36381" /></a></p>
<p>The Valentino show was at 7:00pm and her call time was 3 pm. So at 8 we left the apartment to start the race. First to the agency to check all her train, plane, hotel, contracts for New York Fashion Week. Then, her eyes twinkled, an hour of shopping but just before, her agent told her that she had an unexpected casting for Lebanese designer Zuhair Murad so there went the shopping. We rushed to the Murad casting location. It was a welcome surprise for me, I wanted to take pictures of a casting and usually designers do not let you but when we arrived, I realized that the booker (person who hires models) was an old friend I had lost sight of for years. So I received the authorization to take pictures during the casting. </p>
<p><a href="http://blogs.reuters.com/photographers-blog/files/2013/01/mdf1449586.jpg"><img src="http://blogs.reuters.com/photographers-blog/files/2013/01/mdf1449586.jpg" alt="" title="French top model Marine Deleeuw&#039;s show card (C) is pinned-up amongst others in the backstage of fashion house Valentino&#039;s Haute Couture Spring-Summer 2013 show, in Paris January 23, 2013. Picture taken January 23, 2013 REUTERS/Philippe Wojazer " width="600" height="400" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-36383" /></a></p>
<p>Once the casting was done (two hours), we were late for Valentino so we needed to race again. Arriving at Valentino, photographers are usually allowed a few minutes inside and I was planning to stay 4 hours, but Marine came to my rescue and with a smile and a couple of blinks of her eyes she convinced the security guard that my presence was absolutely crucial to her.</p>
<p><a href="http://blogs.reuters.com/photographers-blog/files/2013/01/mdf1449592.jpg"><img src="http://blogs.reuters.com/photographers-blog/files/2013/01/mdf1449592.jpg" alt="" title="French top model Marine Deleeuw (L) tries on her shoes in the backstage before the start of Lebanese designer Zuhair Murad&#039;s Haute Couture Spring-Summer 2013 fashion show in Paris, January 24, 2013. REUTERS/Philippe Wojazer" width="600" height="400" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-36384" /></a></p>
<p>Backstage at a fashion show is like a hive &#8211; a lot of busy people running in all directions including make-up artists, hairdressers, seamstresses, all kind of workers and people but all very professional. Models are made-up, have their hair done, are checked, go back again to make-up, hairdressing, then everything stops for an hour of rehearsal. Backstage is then peaceful until the whole thing starts again. When the models are ready the dressing starts. There are last minute touches to dresses, ironing, shoes&#8230; A whirlwind during which the only steady person was me, the photographer, still and discreet or the penalty would be eviction.</p>
<p><a href="http://blogs.reuters.com/photographers-blog/files/2013/01/mdf14496351.jpg"><img src="http://blogs.reuters.com/photographers-blog/files/2013/01/mdf14496351.jpg" alt="" title="French top model Marine Deleeuw walks backstage before the start of Lebanese designer Zuhair Murad&#039;s Haute Couture Spring-Summer 2013 fashion collection in Paris, January 24, 2013. REUTERS/Philippe Wojazer" width="600" height="400" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-36385" /></a></p>
<p>I liked this assignment because I think it produced beautiful images of an often glamorous but sometimes tough world.</p>
<p><a href="http://blogs.reuters.com/photographers-blog/files/2013/01/mdf1449644.jpg"><img src="http://blogs.reuters.com/photographers-blog/files/2013/01/mdf1449644.jpg" alt="" title="French top model Marine Deleeuw reads her emails before going to the Valentino Haute Couture Spring-Summer 2013 fashion show in Paris, January 23, 2013. REUTERS/Philippe Wojazer" width="600" height="400" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-36386" /></a></p>
<p>On Sunday Marine left for New York where she will attend fashion week there. For a photographer being on the “dark side of the moon” is always a great opportunity &#8211; an opportunity to meet people, to see and to understand. </p>

<em>The day before French President Nicolas Sarkozy&#8217;s last big political meeting. </em></p>
<p><a href="http://blogs.reuters.com/photographers-blog/files/2012/05/RTR31GEE.jpg"><img src="http://blogs.reuters.com/photographers-blog/files/2012/05/RTR31GEE.jpg" alt="" title="Supporters of France&#039;s President and UMP party candidate for his re-election in the 2012 French presidential elections, Nicolas Sarkozy, wave national flags as he delivers a speech at Trocadero square to during a campaign rally in front the Eiffel Tower in Paris May 1, 2012. REUTERS/Philippe Wojazer " width="600" height="450" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-28520" /></a></p>
<p>During a rally one month earlier I had the idea to place a go-pro camera on a television arm to capture general views of Paris&#8217;s place de la Concorde. I went to the TV production team to ask if I could hang the small camera under their camera without disturbing their images. The problem is that if you put something on the end of their arm, you need to add some weight to the other end so it is balanced and can &#8220;fly&#8221; over the crowd. Balancing weight can be long work. The team were really helpful and at the end of the day, I had my go-pro camera fixed up-there. </p>
<p><a href="http://blogs.reuters.com/photographers-blog/files/2012/05/tv-arm-2600.jpg"><img src="http://blogs.reuters.com/photographers-blog/files/2012/05/tv-arm-2600.jpg" alt="" title="The go-pro camera is visible on the end of the TV arm. REUTERS/Stringer" width="600" height="169" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-28593" /></a></p>
<p>When I returned the next morning they explained that a rescue helicopter had to land near the arm and that all the adjustments had to be redone. We also needed to clean the camera as it was covered with dust from the helicopter. It took us an hour to re-balance, clean and check the go-pro settings (timed to take a picture every 10 seconds). I explained to the technician how to start the camera. Later, when I was among the crowd, I tried to see if the little red light was blinking every 10 seconds. I wasn&#8217;t sure it had worked until I got the camera back and saw it had taken more than 1500 pictures. </p>
<p><a href="http://blogs.reuters.com/photographers-blog/files/2012/05/RTR31GA0.jpg"><img src="http://blogs.reuters.com/photographers-blog/files/2012/05/RTR31GA0.jpg" alt="" title="France&#039;s President and UMP party candidate for his re-election in the 2012 French presidential elections, Nicolas Sarkozy delivers his speech at Trocadero square during a campaign rally in Paris May 1, 2012. <p><em>May 1, 8:00am </em></p>
<p><a href="http://blogs.reuters.com/photographers-blog/files/2012/05/RTR31G7A.jpg"><img src="http://blogs.reuters.com/photographers-blog/files/2012/05/RTR31G7A.jpg" alt="" title="France&#039;s President and UMP party candidate for his re-election in the 2012 French presidential elections, Nicolas Sarkozy shakes hands with supporters as he arrives at Trocadero square to deliver a speech during a campaign rally in Paris May 1, 2012. REUTERS/Philippe Wojazer" width="600" height="399" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-28522" /></a></p>
<p>I arrived at the Trocadero and had to negotiate with the press people to have them allow a photographer to follow Sarkozy through the crowd before his speech. I had followed Sarkozy&#8217;s electoral campaign from the beginning so all the police around him knew me, which proved useful later in the day. The crowd on the Trocadero facing the Eiffel Tower grew throughout the day &#8211; blocking photographer&#8217;s movements. Sarkozy arrived at 3pm. The live TV camera and I were waiting for him and Carla Bruni-Sarkozy at the door of the Palais de Chaillot (Trocadero museum) from where the &#8220;crowd crossing&#8221; would start. </p>
<p><a href="http://blogs.reuters.com/photographers-blog/files/2012/05/RTR31GDJ.jpg"><img src="http://blogs.reuters.com/photographers-blog/files/2012/05/RTR31GDJ.jpg" alt="" title="France&#039;s President and UMP party candidate for his re-election in the 2012 French presidential elections, Nicolas Sarkozy (L) speaks with his wife Carla Bruni-Sarkozy (C) at Trocadero square during a campaign rally in front the Eiffel Tower in Paris May 1, 2012. REUTERS/Philippe Wojazer " width="600" height="399" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-28523" /></a></p>
<p>Then it started. He was (we were) pushed, grabbed, pressed, cheered (well&#8230; he was) for 300 meters through a heavy crowd. Then we arrived at the podium. The plainclothes police did not even pay attention to me as they had seen me every day for 3 months so I ran to the bottom of the platform. I had in mind to shoot photos of Sarkozy with a blue sky background, complete with the Eiffel tower. </p>
<p><a href="http://blogs.reuters.com/photographers-blog/files/2012/05/RTR31G7C.jpg"><img src="http://blogs.reuters.com/photographers-blog/files/2012/05/RTR31G7C.jpg" alt="" title="France&#039;s President and UMP party candidate for his re-election in the 2012 French presidential elections, Nicolas Sarkozy waves to supporters as he arrives on stage at Trocadero square to deliver a speech during a campaign rally in front the Eiffel Tower in Paris May 1, 2012. REUTERS/Philippe Wojazer" width="600" height="399" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-28524" /></a></p>
<p><a href="http://blogs.reuters.com/photographers-blog/files/2012/05/RTR31GKI.jpg"><img src="http://blogs.reuters.com/photographers-blog/files/2012/05/RTR31GKI.jpg" alt="" title="France&#039;s President and UMP party candidate for his re-election in the 2012 French presidential elections, Nicolas Sarkozy waves to supporters as he arrives on stage to deliver his speech at Trocadero square during a campaign rally in Paris May 1, 2012. REUTERS/Philippe Wojazer " width="600" height="399" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-28526" /></a></p>
<p>Even Sarkozy&#8217;s photographer was stopped and told that it was just going to be Sarkozy and me from that point on. Sarkozy climbed onto the podium and turned to the crowd, which explains why he looks like a dancer. After the speech started, I tried to go back into the crowd but it was too dense to cross again, so I discreetly walked behind Sarkozy to shoot more pictures. </p>
<p><a href="http://blogs.reuters.com/photographers-blog/files/2012/05/GOPR15952600.jpg"><img src="http://blogs.reuters.com/photographers-blog/files/2012/05/GOPR15952600.jpg" alt="" title="Photographer Philippe Wojazer crosses behind Nicolas Sarkozy in this image tajen by the go-pro camera." width="600" height="443" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-28594" /></a></p>
<p>To hide from the TV cameras, I concealed myself behind golden statues as I crossed the square. </p>
<p><a href="http://blogs.reuters.com/photographers-blog/files/2012/05/6986388630_11795abaa9_z600.jpg"><img src="http://blogs.reuters.com/photographers-blog/files/2012/05/6986388630_11795abaa9_z600.jpg" alt="" title="Photographer Philippe Wojazer documents Nicolas Sarkozy. <p>I knew I had nice pictures and wanted to transmit them quickly but there were so many people using their phones that it was impossible to send anything using the 3G network. I went to the other side of the esplanade were I hoped other antennas would be free and it worked. I sent a dozen pictures to the office before going back to cover the rest of the speech. </p>
