“You guys are with ME, Osama Bin Laden”

“You guys are with me, Osama Bin Laden. Don’t worry. Nothing bad will happen.” I laughed at hearing this as a feeling of false “security” swept over me.

I was with a TV crew going on patrol of Bogota’s red light district with this wannabe Osama, whose real name is Fernando Aguirre, a 50-year-old poor man who claims to be the son of the real Bin Laden.

As we made the rounds from one brothel to another it became clear that Aguirre has gained the respect of the bouncers of these dens of prostitution here in Latin America’s third most populated capital city.

His only instructions were to stay close to him and not take photographs showing the faces of Colombia’s famously beautiful hookers, who cater to the lust of not only Colombians but also tourists from around the world.

The security guards chuckled and gave Aguirre tips. They and some uniformed police officers, who allow him to carry a fake wooden rifle, chatted with him about security in the area. This Bogota neighborhood is notorious for muggings and gangs of taxi drivers who take people for what is known as the “millionaire’s tour,” which involves being kidnapped for an hour or so and taken at gunpoint from one cash machine to another to empty out your bank account.

Aguirre patrols the neighborhood four or five times every night, until about 5am. Food venders give him something to eat when he needs it and they pour him small cups of coffee to keep him awake. At the end of each night he goes back to where he lives, a secret lair which he refuses to take us to, much like that of his outlaw “father,” wherever he might be.

After living my whole life in Colombia, a country long under the thumb of violent characters, I feel better knowing that this “terrorist” is looking out for us.

Whether or not he is his son, he is so handsome, why would he need to go to the brothels? If he is his son, he certainly must have inherent charm and natural talents that any woman would want.

Geishas are patrolling Tokyo’s red light districts to help curb rising petty crimes, why not this guy? I think he’s got a great idea going.

What a great opportunity for USA. Capture this guy, record some Arabic, translate the way you want .. (you get the point … hire some film directors) , put him through court system, stage execution …
Even if some Americans would question it, the idea would be so outrages that by the time people would caught up, it would be like the “yellow cake from Africa vs. going to war for oil” … too little too late …

This could do more to global war on terror than the weak loosing barely 100,000 ’strong’ army this country otherwise has to relay on to ensure its “strategic positioning” (translation, think oil)

Why is this news? So he looks like a terrorist with that beard, I do to when I don’t shave.

If they want to write about Colombia, why not write articles on what’s happening in Colombia today with all the positive changes.

If they don’t catch the real Osama soon, you can be sure they’ll take this fellow into custody and tell the American people that they have.

To be terrorist is not necesserally to have a beard or a rosary or anything of that sort. A terrorist may have any appearance you could imagine; he might be an angel, an innocent beautiful girl, a chic smart, elegant, and refined man. Appearances are illusive and should not be trusted.
To me this man is a symbol. He is to tell us that what we do all the time is prejudging other religions and other cultures. Ossama bin laden is so ruthless and unconscionable as to kill millions of people; he might change his appearance and his fellows’ just for the same reason which is the fact of his being a villain.

I guess claiming to be the illegitimate son of Fidel Castro is no longer considered en vogue in this part of the hemisphere.

Fernando Aguirre is 50. Osama bin Laden will be 51 on March 10, 2008. That’s very young to be Fernando’s father. :)
