Travelled the Kangding to Litang section last September and it is truly the WWR as you describe, or should I say try to describe. I don't know if words give the full picture of how exciting to nightmarish travel is on this road. This is "adventure travel" without leave the seat of your vehicle. You failed to mention the behemoth sized trucks and maniac bus drivers that add to the terror. Thank you for your post. One day we will return to this drive and it will be a nice four lane highway, and the thrill will be gone.

Sorry david but I've travelled that road and there are MUCH worse in that part of Kham. Try the road north of Bingzhongluo, in NW Yunnan, or the road south from Deqing along the Mekong (Lancang) for starters. The road from Muli to Chabulang in Sichuan is also a shocker.

Enjoy reading this blog but have found one picture caption is not accurate. The caption in your blog has no problem. The questionable one is from http://www.reuters.com/news/pictures/searchpopup?picId=3811598 (A Tibetan woman dressed in traditional Qiang minority attire sits in her home in Baima Township located around 200 kilometres (124 miles) north of the city of Mianyang, Sichuan province, March 28, 2008.) The woman looks like a Qiang Chinese, not a Tibetan Chinese. Qiang is another minority out of 56 ethnic groups in China. So a tibetan wears traditional Qiang attire doesn't make lot of sense to me.

[...] Chris finally managed to find a villager that spoke Chinese, everyone spoke Tibetan, and after a few broad questions about the riots in Lhasa and surrounding areas and what he thought about them, Chris asked him what he thought of the Dalai Lama. This ordinary, hard-working farmer who toiled in the fields 12 hours-a-day, every day, said ‘The Dalai Lama is like a member of the family that can’t come home’.
